GERD Awareness Week -- November 23-29, 2025
It’s no coincidence. GERD Awareness Week lands right when many of us are piling our plates a little higher during this holiday season. If you struggle with heartburn, indigestion, or that post-meal burn, this week is a reminder to listen to your gut — literally. Small tweaks to holiday eating habits can make a big difference.
Here are a few things to consider:
• Go smaller on portion size. Big, heavy meals are a classic trigger. A slightly smaller plate can go a long way.
• Slow down. Eating too quickly can worsen reflux. Give your stomach time to keep up.
• Limit the big offenders. Greasy foods, acidic dishes, tomato-based sides, chocolate, peppermint, coffee, and alcohol can all stir up symptoms.
• Don’t lie down after eating. Give yourself at least 2–3 hours upright after a meal — yes, even after Thanksgiving dinner.
• Stay hydrated (but sip). Drinking a ton of fluid while eating can add pressure to the stomach; sipping is easier on the system.
• Try smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day instead of saving everything for one giant feast.
• Wear comfy clothes. Tight waistbands can add pressure to your stomach and make reflux worse — stretchy pants aren’t just for fashion.
• Walk it off. A light walk after eating helps digestion and reduces symptoms.
• Know your personal triggers. GERD is not one-size-fits-all.
