Today, on Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their lives so we can live in freedom.

Last week, I stood on French soil alongside and the .de , German War Graves Commission, to honor six fallen German-Jewish soldiers from WWI—men who had been buried under crosses, though they lived and died as Jews.

Meier Levi, Julius Loewenstein, Moses Cohen, Eduard Moses, Friedrich Rahmer, and Siegmund Metzler. Their names are now etched into a new monument that reflects their true identity and the faith they lived by.

It was the first ceremony under a new initiative called Operation Levi—a mission to restore Jewish dignity even after a century. I had the privilege of helping uncover some of these names and be in touch with their families.

There is no statute of limitations on gratitude. May their memories be a blessing.

Happy Rosh Hashonah to all. May you and your family be signed and sealed for a sweet new year.

Cemetery research is such an important part of genealogy. Tombstones have key genealogical clues engraved in the stone. The headstones can reveal much more than birth and death dates. Some have symbols related to military service or religious beliefs, parents of the person buried, revealing maiden names, etc.

Once we find out where an ancestor is buried we have many ways to get a photo of the headstone, but especially since Covid it has become more challenging. Cemeteries have less staff and less resources to take and send photos and some don’t allow visitors at all. Often times cemeteries are abandoned as was the case yesterday when Eric went to this cemetery in Newark NJ to find the graves of one of his clients’ ancestors. Swipe right to see how many of the stones were on the ground in disarray.

So, it was especially exciting when Eric found the graves he was looking for, which contain the parents names and helps research the family back even further!

Like & share this post if you think this is as exciting as we do!

We researched Jason's family in America and Poland and were able to uncover tons of information that he didn't know about, including the burial places of his great-great-grandparents here in America.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It seemed like the last name "Raphael" would be an easy name to research, but it turned out that his family didn't have a consistent spelling when they came over to America and different family members used various spellings making it more challenging.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How far back can you trace your family? Tell us in the comments below. We were able to trace Jason's family 6 generations back so far!!

Our business is really focused on the past, but very often a reason why people want to research their ancestry is to connect with living relatives. We have had a lot of success not only finding, but also opening the lines of communication and reconnecting clients with living relatives.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While we base all of our genealogy connections on documentary research, this is one area where we recommend that our clients take a DNA test to increase the odds of finding a long lost relative. We assist in contacting anyone that comes up as a match to see if there is an actual relation.

Double tap if this resonates with you and let us know in the comments if you have been able to or have an interest in finding living relatives.
