Rising star EMTs Parris Cavill and Sterling Halimon had a transfer to Cranberry Park Assisted Living recently and both the staff and their patient stated that they were exceptional and very professional.

Both Parris and Sterling are graduates of the Medstar EMT Training Program and are making a difference in their community. Great job!

When you are outside, frostbite and hypothermia are possible so you need to protect yourself. The National Weather Service advises that you:
1. Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.
2. Wear a hat. Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
3. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
4. Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.

Let's stay safe, together!

Medstar paramedic Nick Montry and EMT Andrea Browne, along with Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety officers, responded to a man who had collapsed at home and was not breathing normally. Officers quickly started CPR and used an AED before our crew arrived.

When Medstar took over care, they initiated advanced life support (ALS) procedures, including cardiac medications, advanced airway management, and additional cardiac treatment. Shortly after ALS care was initiated, the patient regained spontaneous cardiac activity and a palpable pulse. Within minutes, his heart rhythm and respiratory function stabilized, and he was transported to Henry Ford St. John Hospital for continued care and eventual discharge.

They were recognized by the Detroit East Medical Control Authority for their life-saving response on this call.

Extreme cold takes hold overnight tonight. We want to share a few reminders to help keep you safe. We joke about being “Michigan weather pros,” but our ambulance responses during cold snaps tell a different story.

Layer up, stay dry, and change out of wet clothing right away. If fingers or toes are exposed to freezing temperatures, warm them gently with warm (not hot) water, and never rub or massage frostbitten areas.

Know the warning signs of frostbite and hypothermia. The graphic lays them out, but here’s the most important takeaway:
If someone exposed to cold is confused, drowsy, or acting differently, they need emergency care right away.
If you suspect hypothermia, call 911 immediately. Stay safe, stay warm, and look out for each other this weekend.

Medstar is proud to be the first EMS agency in Southeast Michigan to provide whole blood for trauma patients and patients experiencing hemorrhagic shock due to severe medical emergencies. A key part of this work is our partnership with Versiti Blood Center to strengthen and expand the local blood supply across our service area.

Our next community blood drive is this Tuesday, January 20, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at our Detroit station on Piquette Avenue. We have added additional appointment slots to accommodate more donors!

This event is open to the public and will give community members the opportunity to tour our new Detroit facility while supporting a critical need that directly impacts patient survival. All donors will be entered into a drawing to win a six-person loge suite for an upcoming Detroit Red Wings game, along with Medstar swag.

We hope you will join us for this important community event!

This week, we recognize EMTs Michael Gall and Tony Gallo, who went above and beyond the call of duty for a hospice patient. They stayed with the patient to ensure they were able to get settled comfortably at home after the patient’s equipment was delivered late. Your compassion and care for this patient are appreciated.
