Each December, community members from across Southeast Michigan visit Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak at 8PM. Many arrive in holiday costumes with flashlights and holiday lights to remind pediatric patients that they aren’t alone and to wish them sweet dreams.

Medstar EMT Cheryl Dauphinee joined the Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams mission of "helping our youngest and bravest patients feel connected to their community during the holiday season".

As temperatures plummet this weekend, there are places you can go to stay warm. Warming Centers are available to provide relief for those without shelter or power.
Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can have negative health consequences, including: hypothermia, frostbite, trench foot and chilblains.

To find a Warming Center near you, DTE has complied a list:

Medstar personnel were paired with kids in Davison and Lapeer this week to shop for Christmas gifts for their families in the "Shop with a Hero" event.

As the extreme cold moves in this weekend, we want to share a few reminders to help keep you safe. We joke about being “Michigan weather pros,” but our ambulance responses during cold snaps tell a different story.

Layer up, stay dry, and change out of wet clothing right away. If fingers or toes are exposed to freezing temperatures, warm them gently with warm (not hot) water, and never rub or massage frostbitten areas.

Know the warning signs of frostbite and hypothermia. The graphic lays them out, but here’s the most important takeaway:

If someone exposed to cold is confused, drowsy, or acting differently, they need emergency care right away.

If you suspect hypothermia, call 911 immediately. Stay safe, stay warm, and look out for each other this weekend.

Medstar continues to award AEDs to schools, churches, non-profit and civic organizations. When a bystander uses an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) on a person in cardiac arrest, their likelihood of survival doubles. Medstar recognizes community AED placement as the most important component of increasing cardiac arrest survival throughout our emergency coverage area.

Pull Over and Stay Stopped
If there is an emergency vehicle coming your way with its lights and/or sirens activated, pull over to the right and stop until it passes. Do not attempt to keep moving while you are on the side of the road. Emergency vehicles often need to exceed the posted speed limit, so it’s safest for cars to stay out of potential lanes of traffic until they’ve cleared your area.

Michigan's Move Over law requires motorists to slow down and move over for stationary authorized vehicles with flashing, rotating, or oscillating lights activated.
