The Arc of Macomb has been so proud to partner with CBHJโ€™s DIBS program! Through this program, we have been able to help almost 100 people with disabilities to access services and avoid contacts with the criminal justice system.

The CBHJโ€™s Diversion Intervention through Boundary Spanning (DIBS) evaluation and consulting team shared program updates this week with the Michigan Mental Health Diversion Council.

Since April 2023, CBHJ has partnered with four pilot sites across Michigan to develop boundary spanner programs that strengthen cross-system collaboration and improve continuity of care for adults with behavioral health concerns involved in the criminal legal system.

Pilot partners for the project were Summit Pointe of Calhoun County, Integrated Services of Kalamazoo, The Arc of Macomb County and Community Mental Health of Ottawa County.

Representatives from the pilot sites shared how collaboration, early partner engagement, and addressing social determinants of health support individuals as they build skills to improve their success in the community. Additional jail-based outcomes will be shared by the CBHJ/DIBS data team later this spring.

Federal officials have said they intend to move the administration of IDEAโ€™s programs out of the U.S. Department of Education to a different department. Not only would this change disrupt services that students with disabilities depend on, it would also make it harder to hold the government accountable when students don't get the services they're entitled to and rely on.

For nearly 50 years, IDEA has been administered by the Department of Education, ensuring that students with disabilities have access to a free and appropriate public education. Keeping it there is critical.

On March 24, weโ€™ll be meeting with members of Congress on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers need to hear from people with disabilities and their families about issues that affect their daily lives. Tell us what disability programs mean in your life, and weโ€™ll share your story in person during our Hill Day meetings.

When decisions are being made about funding and access to services, real stories can help shape what happens next.
