Earlier this year we formed an Innovation Committee to explore new ways to improve patient care. One of the areas of focus is asthma care for children and youth in rural communities, who often face challenges accessing consistent healthcare.

We are excited to introduce the At Last Pediatric Asthma Care at Home (ALPACAH) program, which allows families to monitor asthma from home using a spirometer that connects directly to their provider. The system tracks lung function and provides virtual coaching to improve inhalation techniques, making it easier for families to manage asthma without frequent trips to the doctor or emergency room.

This program helps remove barriers like travel time and limited access to specialists while ensuring children get the care they need to manage their asthma effectively. We are proud to continue finding innovative ways to provide high-quality, accessible care to our community.

We are proud to share that one of our Podiatrists, Dr. Arthur Evensen, received second- and third-place national awards at this year’s Desert Foot Conference in both the Attending and Resident categories.

Notably, second place was awarded for Social Isolation and Limb Preservation: The Case for the Podiatric Connection Model (PCM) — one of several research papers developed at GVMH and soon to be published.

The PCM is a practical, evidence-based framework that recognizes how social connection influences postoperative adherence, pain perception and limb-salvage outcomes, with particular impact for rural and veteran populations.

This national recognition highlights GVMH’s commitment to innovative, patient-centered research and leadership in rural healthcare.

This week has been full of festive fun for our team! From Ugly Sweater Thursdays to our Employee Holiday Meal with delicious sides and desserts, plus guest piano players filling the halls with beautiful holiday music, we have been celebrating the season in style. We also opened our GVMH Holiday Sharing Store and launched Operation Golden Halo to support employees and their families during the holiday season.

The celebrations continued with the annual Auxiliary Christmas Treats and Sweets event and we wrapped up the week with the Benevolence Fund Gift Basket Raffle. Next week, we will carol throughout the Cancer Center, hospital patient rooms and ICU to spread holiday cheer to our patients and staff.

On Saturday, January 3, the Clinton and Sherwood basketball teams will play in the Fifth Annual Dunk on Cancer Game at Clinton High School. The Girls Junior Varsity begins at 3 p.m., Boys Junior Varsity begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by Girls Varsity at 6 p.m. and Boys Varsity at 7:30 p.m.

Both schools are raising money for the GVMH Bourland Radiation Oncology Center. The game will feature several fundraising events, including a soup and chili dinner with dessert and a silent auction.
