Detox and residential treatment are different, and both matter.

Detox is often the first step, helping the body safely stabilize. Residential treatment is where real healing, structure, and long-term recovery begin. Research shows that the longer someone remains in a supportive, structured care environment, the greater their chances of lasting recovery.

At Freedom House, we provide multi-phase residential recovery programs and access to community-based outpatient services that help individuals rebuild their lives, maintain independence, and reconnect with family and purpose. Our mission is urgent and life-saving: ensure New Jersey residents can access sustained recovery support.

If you or someone you love has completed detox and is wondering what comes next, compassionate, long-term support can make all the difference.

February is American Heart Month 💙

At Freedom House, whole-person care is at the heart of recovery—and that includes heart health. This month is a reminder that caring for your heart plays a powerful role in long-term healing and overall well-being.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and substance use can significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular issues. Alcohol, opioids, and other substances place added strain on the heart, making heart health an important part of the recovery journey, especially in communities facing barriers to care and stigma.

Tips for a heart-healthy recovery:
• Schedule regular checkups and monitor blood pressure
• Eat a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
• Move your body: walking, yoga, or strength training all count
• Manage stress and prioritize self-care (it’s essential, not selfish)

Recovery isn’t just about staying sober; it’s about caring for your mind, body, and heart. When we invest in our health today, we build stronger futures for ourselves and our communities.

Today reminds us that early education, community support, and access to the right resources can make a profound difference in reducing substance use and protecting long-term health, long before crisis occurs.

At Freedom House, prevention isn’t just a word; it’s part of a continuum of care that supports people at every stage of the recovery journey. From outpatient services to residential treatment, housing and recovery support, Freedom House helps individuals build life skills, secure employment, reunite with loved ones, and strengthen community ties.

Prevention works. Evidence shows that when people and communities are informed, connected, and supported early on, the risk of addiction and long-term health challenges decreases. Prevention is not just possible, it’s proven.

“The time is always right to do what is right.”

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who stood for justice, equality, and compassion, even in the face of adversity.

At Freedom House, we carry that message forward by advocating for dignity, opportunity, and access to care for every individual seeking recovery. Because doing what’s right means showing up for those who need support most.

Winter can bring unique challenges for those in recovery, from shorter days and seasonal mood changes to increased stress and isolation. That’s why self-care isn’t just important, it’s essential.

Staying connected with your support system, keeping a consistent routine, prioritizing mental health, moving your body, and focusing on proper rest and nutrition can all help strengthen resilience during the colder months. These habits support emotional balance, reduce cravings, and reinforce the healthy structure that recovery thrives on.

Recovery is a journey, and winter is a time to nurture both your mind and body. You don’t have to face it alone.

Our Story

Freedom House New Jersey, founded in 1986, provides four innovative model programs for those suffering from substance use and co-occurring disorders: long-term residential treatment in a halfway house setting to adult males; Transitional/sober living programs for men; The Family Afterward a transitional program that provides intensive case management for women who are recovering from alcoholism and/or drug addiction and who are seeking reunification with their children; and the two outpatient locations for men and women who are in need of treatment, but also need to maintain their careers and family life during the recovery period. Freedom House is committed to saving lives and reuniting families by keeping our doors and minds open, our staff engaged and our mission alive. We have too many success stories over 32 years to stop now. Our commitment to the future remains firm. For more information, please call 908.617.5492 or visit www.freedomhousenj.org.
