“Human Grade” — what it really means (and what it doesn’t).

On the surface, “Human Grade” sounds like the gold standard for dog food. It means:
✅ All ingredients are legally edible for people
✅ The food is produced in a facility that meets human food safety standards
✅ Storage, handling, and transport follow strict human-food regulations

That’s a good thing when it comes to safety and sanitation.

But here’s the catch…
👉 Many of the most nutritious foods for dogs aren’t considered human-edible in the U.S. Green tripe, lung, certain organs, and other animal parts that dogs thrive on can’t make the cut in a “human grade” formula.

So while “human grade” looks impressive on the bag, it often means leaving out nutrient-rich foods that support canine health.

What do you think? Is “human grade” really the most important thing in dog food… or is it better to include the parts dogs actually need?

Today I opened my notebook to Day 2 of my Professional Canine Nutrition Certification (PCNC) through the Feed Real Institute, and I’m so excited about where this journey is taking me. 🐾✨

As a pet parent and the owner of The Wholistic Paws, I know how overwhelming nutrition can feel—marketing buzzwords, endless kibble options, raw vs cooked debates… it’s a lot. That’s exactly why I’m pursuing this certification: to gain a deeper, science-based understanding of canine nutrition and to guide pet parents with clarity and confidence.

This isn’t just about learning for myself—it’s about bringing trustworthy, evidence-backed knowledge into our community so our pets can live longer, healthier lives. 💚🐕

I’m grateful to be learning through the Feed Real Institute, and I look forward to sharing parts of this journey with you. Because when our pets thrive, we thrive too.
