🔹Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day, commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States.
🔹Specifically, it marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in the state were free. This was nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
🔹The name Juneteenth is a portmanteau that combines the words June and nineteenth. Its origins date back to June 19, 1865, when the last group of people enslaved in the southern U.S. were informed of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.
