Expressing needs in a positive manner (rather than a demanding, blaming, or guilting way) can rebuild connection. 💗 From the Experts.

Sharing positive needs is an important step in ensuring that you and your partner can feel more connected, loved, and supported. After you've discussed concerns or regrettable incidents, expressing a positive need helps reinforce your connection.

What is Couple's Therapy??? For those that aren't sure what it looks like, here's a quick run down:

Fearlessness is not the absence of fear, it's the absence of allowing fear to hold you back. This is a learned skill. A new firefighter doesn't run into a burning house without practice of using their safety equipment and definitely do not do it alone! Use your safety equipment and look fear in the face, for your life as well as those closest to you. 🙏🏻 Be prepared!

A few things for Food for Thought:

Don't Diet! Instead, fuel your body. What does this mean to you? Part of our human experience includes our ability to use our frontal brain to make forward (goal-oriented) decisions. However, we don't do this on autopilot or when we are eating based on our mood ("What do I feel like eating today?"). When we really think about what we eat and make informed decisions (food that gives us energy, motivation, focus), we can fuel ourselves for optimal well-being and happiness.

Don't Cheat! Eat smart, use proper portion sizes, and have those super sugary, tasty, and high carb load meals be an occasional thing, not a staple in your fueling plan. When we listen to our body, notice our energy, recognize how we feel AFTER we eat, we can tune in with better awareness. No one likes IBS, pain, headaches, inflamed joints and gut, and our food choices can change this! Learn to eat to 80-85% fullness (this takes practice and slowing down). Veggies give us gut motility and a healthier balance of vitamins and minerals that help brain function and mood balance.

Don't Binge Drink! When you do, you switch your fueling system into a mode that processes alcohol first, food second, and that leads to more fat storage. Alcohol is not your friend and moderation (not going to point of feeling tipsy/buzzed), will also help with weight loss. Better weight for your frame also helps your heart, brain size (!!!), and ability to be more mobile.

Knowing better doesn't mean doing better either. This takes practice and support. What do you need to create a better balance for yourself?

Really digging this book! It is written out as many interviews with successful people from all over. "The little things we do, day in and day out, impact our growth and shape who we are." Microhabits! I teach this along with James Clear's Atomic Habits (habit stacking being one of them). Check it out. And as a reminder, get that natural light in for at least 10-30 minutes within the first hour of the day to promote increased focus and energy (circadian rhythm hack from Andrew Huberman).

Are you a couple "on the brink," maybe considering taking a different direction in your marriage, or just not knowing how you can stay in the relationship at all? There's counseling that helps with this!

Some couples aren't ready to call it quits, though one or both may be resigning to the thought that it will never change. It's common, but not ok to feel "stuck" long-term.

I am trained in Discernment Counseling which is a very short-term approach (up to 5 sessions) that I can utilize to help you determine whether you want to stay the course as is, attend couples counseling, or go a different direction.

Email me and I can do a free 20-minute screening with each of you, but both of you have to be willing to contact me and talk. This is not individual therapy, though I do offer that as well (even via telehealth in Iowa).

This is a self-pay process (no insurance), but it would definitely be less expensive than mediation or divorce attorney retainer if you're just not sure yet. Let me help you invest in your marriage and your future!

Do you know your Enneagram type? This is one of the tools we use in our clinical practice at RCC and costs you $0 if you are working with me in therapy.

We utilize it to identify some of the hidden aspects of your personality based upon core needs and how you attempt to get those needs met, especially in relationships.

It sheds light on personality quirks (traits) and can help you better understand your relationship style and how you tend to interact with others. Sound interesting?

In addition, we use this in couples counseling to enhance your relationship connections in conjunction with further exploration.

Now, you can take free tests online but those are best guess algorithms. This one (link below) analyzes additional aspects based upon a longer inquiry of tendencies. The test costs $12, is 144 questions, and you answer not by comparison of each pair of statements, but by which ones seem like a closer fit to your behaviors.

If you do this in counseling with me, we take it to next level exploration as it relates to your life experiences. Send me an email so we can schedule a few sessions to uncover where your growth may lay. 💗 By the way, I'm a 4 with some very neat understandings of why I ended up becoming a therapist. 🧐🫣 Email me at: Cora@realconnectionscounseling.com

The Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type Indicator (RHETI® version 2.5) is the world's most popular Enneagram-based test. It is a scientifically validated, forced-choice personality test with 144 paired statements. The test takes about 40 minutes to complete.

Despite PTSD being a common term these days, many are not sure what that means beyond knowing they experienced a traumatic event and it's causing them large amounts of "stress." Here's an image that captures some of the symptoms, but not even all of them. Complex PTSD is also a curious term. If you have experienced several or many highly stressful/triggering events in your life, it complicates symptoms further, and this can drastically impair your life. Relationships, whether at home or work, suffer and it seems hopeless. Hopelessness is a symptom, not the diagnosis nor the expected outcome. Please seek help if you are experiencing this, it WILL get worse if you don't. ❤️‍🩹 You are more important than your past and life CAN get better with some support! ❣️
