Not all CPAP masks are created equal and choosing the wrong one might be exactly why some people give up on therapy altogether! Let's break down the three most common types so you can find YOUR perfect fit:
--Full Face Mask: covers both your nose and mouth. Best for mouth breathers, frequent snorers, or anyone who wakes up with a dry mouth. Can feel bulkier but is a great option if you deal with nasal congestion regularly.
--Nasal Pillow Mask: the most minimal option, sitting directly at your nostrils. Perfect if you feel claustrophobic with larger masks or are an active sleeper. Keep in mind it may not be ideal for higher pressure settings.
--Nasal Mask: covers just your nose. Lightweight, easier to seal, and works great for side sleepers. Not the best choice if you tend to breathe through your mouth at night.

The right mask can be the difference between therapy that changes your life and one that ends up in your nightstand drawer. At Des Moines Sleep Specialists, our team takes the time to find the mask that works best for YOUR face, YOUR sleep style, and YOUR comfort.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month πŸ’š

The connection between sleep and mental health is one we think about every single day. Poor sleep doesn't just leave you tired. It can fuel anxiety, worsen depression, make it harder to manage stress, and cloud your thinking. And on the flip side, untreated mental health conditions can make it nearly impossible to get quality sleep. It works both ways.

If you've been struggling with your mood, focus, or emotional wellbeing AND you're not sleeping well addressing your sleep could be a powerful first step. Our team at Des Moines Sleep Specialists is here to help you find the root cause and get you on a better path.

Imagine falling asleep mid-conversation, mid-meal, or even while driving β€” with no warning. For people living with narcolepsy, this is their reality every single day.

Narcolepsy is a chronic brain disorder that causes uncontrollable episodes of sleepiness and, in many cases, sudden muscle weakness (known as cataplexy) triggered by strong emotions. It's often misunderstood or misdiagnosed for years before patients get the answers they need.

At Des Moines Sleep Specialists, we have the expertise to properly diagnose and create a personalized treatment plan to help manage narcolepsy symptoms.

Do you find yourself sleeping 10+ hours a night and STILL feeling exhausted during the day? You might be dealing with hypersomnia. A condition characterized by excessive sleepiness that doesn't go away no matter how much rest you get.

Unlike narcolepsy, hypersomnia doesn't usually cause sudden sleep attacks, but it can leave you feeling foggy, sluggish, and unable to function at your best throughout the day.

You deserve better than that. Hypersomnia is a real, diagnosable sleep disorder and there are treatment options that can help.

Today is ASAA Sleep Apnea Awareness Day!

Did you know that sleep apnea affects millions of Americans and many don't even know they have it? Sleep apnea causes your breathing to repeatedly stop and start while you sleep, leaving you exhausted, foggy, and at risk for serious health complications like heart disease and high blood pressure.

Common signs include loud snoring, waking up gasping for air, and feeling tired no matter how much sleep you get. The good news? It's treatable.

At Des Moines Sleep Specialists, we specialize in diagnosing and managing sleep apnea for both adults and children. Don't ignore the signs.

Do you wake up with a sore jaw, headaches, or sensitive teeth? You might be grinding your teeth in your sleep.

Sleep Bruxism is a sleep-related movement disorder where you unconsciously clench or grind your teeth during the night. It's more common than you think β€” and more damaging than most people realize.

Left untreated, sleep bruxism can cause:
--Worn-down or cracked teeth
--Chronic jaw pain & TMJ disorder
--Disrupted, unrestorative sleep
--Morning headaches & facial pain

Sleep bruxism is often linked to sleep apnea, stress, and other sleep disorders β€” which is why a sleep specialist should be part of your care team.
