This week the Washington Post reported on a recent study led by researchers at Harvard University and Mass General Brigham that showed 30% of stillbirths in the U.S. occurred in pregnancies without known risk factors — emphasizing the need for standardized prevention methods.

There IS a proven prevention method that is saving babies (and moms) across the globe. It’s called Count the Kicks. And to date the program has collected more than 150 baby save stories from families around the country and world. We know there are hundreds more success stories out there.

Count the Kicks is evidence-based and backed by research. A baby’s movement is directly connected to their well-being, which is why it’s so important to monitor movements and have a good understanding of what a baby’s normal movement pattern is during the third trimester.

Grassroots efforts are vital in our work, and are supported by the generosity of partners like Elevance Health Foundation.

Throughout the year our team travels the country to increase awareness about Count the Kicks, our life-saving tool that helps expectant parents monitor movements during the third trimester.

Over the past two years we have shared Count the Kicks with thousands of people by attending several events across our 10 Elevance partner states, allowing us to teach thousands of people about our easy-to-use app and free stillbirth prevention materials, which are also made free through partnerships like this.

Including fetal movement monitoring conversations during prenatal appointments reinforces the importance of expectant parents knowing what their baby’s normal is.

Consistent kick counting conversations also encourage expectant moms to be comfortable speaking up if they notice a change in their baby’s movements.

Research shows that at least 25% of stillbirths are preventable. Tools like Count the Kicks are helping make this number a reality.

Families from around the country have contacted us to let us know that our free app helped get their baby here safely. That’s the impact of ensuring that expectant moms are equipped with stillbirth prevention education.

Partners like Elevance Health Foundation health help us reach more moms with this vital education when and where they need it most.

Every pregnant mom deserves tools and support she can trust, no matter where she lives. Monitoring fetal movement with evidence‑based solutions like Count the Kicks can help expectant moms improve the conversation during routine prenatal care and help them be more alert to potential red flags so they know when it’s time to seek evaluation by a healthcare provider.

The statistics are staggering. Data shows that expectant parents in some age groups, racial and ethnic groups, geographic locations, and those expecting multiples face an increased risk of stillbirth. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We’re working to lower the stillbirth rate and reach the expectant parents most at risk of experiencing a stillbirth through proven solutions like Count the Kicks.
