Yesterday, in memory of their loved one, family members of Betty Lou Gonzales generously gifted $5,000 to support our Oncology Support Services here at Community Cancer Institute.

We are truly grateful for their generosity and for allowing Betty’s legacy to continue making a difference in the lives of so many. Moments like these remind us of the strength of community and the compassion that carries us forward.

At the same time, an “Honor Your Care Hero” award was presented to Alva Reyes, Betty’s patient navigator. ❤️

Today, these two senior students from Duncan Polytechnical High School’s CTE program showcased their poster project reflecting their time volunteering on the third floor here at Community Cancer Institute and shadowing our nursing team.

Through this experience, they gained valuable hands-on insight and a first-hand look at what it’s like to provide compassionate, patient-centered care in an oncology setting.

This calming experience uses soothing sound vibrations to help reduce stress, promote relaxation and create a sense of peace… something every patient deserves along their journey.

Glenda was diagnosed with terminal stage four cancer.

Under the care of her oncologist, Dr. Omer Ilyas, she began chemotherapy. At first, there was progress, but after a few months, it stopped working.

Her care team then turned to immunotherapy. But instead of improving, Glenda’s condition worsened. Her body began to shut down.

That’s when the difficult decision was made to move her to hospice care at home. And then something unexpected happened.

While at home, her body slowly began to respond to the immunotherapy. Month by month, she grew stronger. Six months later, Glenda made a decision no one expected… she took herself off hospice. It was a miracle and Dr. Ilyas believes the immunotherapy just needed some time to show results and that allowed Glenda to make a miraculous recovery.

She walked back into Dr. Ilyas’s office and asked for another scan and it showed no signs of cancer. She rang the bell. 🎉

What once felt like the end became something extraordinary, a reminder that healing can come when it’s least expected. ❤️
