the LIVING ROOM: yoga, mindfulness, meditation, a place to gather
One thing leads to another … but only if we have the courage to say “yes.”
Have you ever had one of those simple conversations with someone in the aisles at Glenn’s that changes the direction of your life? That happened to me in May, 2019. I ran into Sydney Wiley while dressed in yoga garb … it came up that I am a teacher and she made the offhand suggestion I get a class going in town … that she was sure there would be people interested. And then she showed me the space at 508 Miles Avenue. Two weeks later there was a room full of yoga mats and a super nervous teacher sitting at the front of the room.
I don’t know if you’ve seen the space at 508 since Western Drug relocated. But it’s perfect. And it’s especially perfect for yoga. I could not love it more: The tall ceilings. The ancient hard wood floors. Even the water stain scar on the North Wall. It’s this beautiful reminder of the scars we all have from life and a testament to our strength that we keep standing.
After about 6 months of offering a few classes a week, I am very grateful to the students who keep showing up and are so engaged and encouraging. It has inspired me to want to take over the space on a more permanent basis to create a new kind of offering. My goal is to create an intimate community gathering place. I’ll keep teaching yoga and meditation classes. In fact, starting Jan 1, there are 7 classes a week (Monday - Friday) and I’ve invited a few other teachers to join me so we can offer different styles and methods of teaching. But I would love to see the scope of it’s usefulness expand … to create a space for pop-up dinners, book clubs, seasonal market … maybe even beanbag movie nights for kids and adults, or an after-school reading room. There is a lot to do, but the possibilities are exciting and limited only by the needs and wants of this incredible community.
