Week 3: A Salute to Our Heroes – Captain Richard Lyon Edwards

Theme: Military & Sacrifice

This week, we want to honor a true hero from our own backyard.

• The Hero: Captain Richard Lyon Edwards, a Coal Grove native, served our country with distinction in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

• The Sacrifice: Captain Edwards was a pilot who tragically lost his life in 1968 during hostile action in South Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and is forever honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

• Community Pride: We are proud to be the home of such brave men and women. Coal Grove has always stepped up when our country called.

Week 2: From Iron to Industry – Why "Coal Grove"?

Theme: Business & Local Origins

Ever wonder why we aren’t called "Iron Grove"? In the late 1800s, this area was the heart of the industrial boom!

• The Boom: Coal Grove was often called the "suburb of Ironton." In 1891, our growth exploded because we were perfectly positioned between the Ohio River and the railways.

• The Big Business: Before the modern era, the Yellow Poplar Lumber Company was one of the biggest employers in the area.

• The "Bad" History: It wasn’t always easy. Living in a coal and iron hub meant hard, dangerous work. Many of our ancestors worked in the 23 blast furnaces in Lawrence County, which at one time led the entire world in pig iron production!

Week 1: The School Legend – Why "Dawson-Bryant"?

Theme: Education & Local Heroes

Did you know that our school district carries the names of two local heroes? Many people know the name, but few know the story!

• The Fact: The Dawson-Bryant Local School District was named in honor of two local men, Homer Dawson and Curtis Bryant, who both served and fought during World War I.

• The "Red" History: Before we had our modern schools, Coal Grove was home to the "Little Red School House," built in 1850. It only had one room and one teacher (Joseph Burk). It was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1905, but its memory lives on in our community’s commitment to education.

• Trivia: Does anyone remember the Monitor School? It was built right after the fire for $24,000—a fortune back in 1905!
