🦋 January is Thyroid Awareness Month

Your thyroid may be small, but it plays a big role in your overall health, helping regulate energy, metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature.

Why awareness matters:
⚠️ About 20 million Americans have thyroid disease
⚠️ Up to 60% don’t know they have it
⚠️ Women are 5–8 times more likely than men to be affected
(Source: American Thyroid Association)

Common symptoms can include fatigue, weight changes, mood changes, hair thinning, or feeling unusually cold or hot. Because symptoms are often subtle, thyroid issues can go undiagnosed for years.

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️The good news? A simple blood test can help detect thyroid problems early. If something feels “off,” don’t ignore it, talk with your provider.

📞 Our team is here to help support your thyroid health.

❄️ Weather Reminder: Medication Refills 💊

With the potential for winter weather (ice, snow, or sleet) , we encourage patients to check their medications now and request refills ahead of time if needed.

Severe weather could impact clinic & pharmacy hours. Planning ahead helps ensure you do not miss important doses.

📌 Keep an eye on our page for updates, we will post as soon as any closure or schedule changes are confirmed.

🧠 Know Your Body: The Liver

Your liver is one of the hardest-working organs in your body, and many people don’t realize how much it does every single day.

🔍 What is it?
The liver is a large organ located on the right side of your abdomen, just under your ribs.

⚙️ What does it do?
• Filters toxins from your blood
• Helps digest food and absorb nutrients
• Regulates blood sugar levels
• Supports metabolism and energy storage

📌 Did you know?
• The liver can regenerate itself
• You can have liver disease with little or no symptoms
• Fatty liver disease is increasingly common, even in people who don’t drink alcohol

🧍How to take care of your liver:
• Eat a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins
• Limit sugary drinks and processed foods
• Stay physically active
• Avoid excessive alcohol use
• Get routine checkups and lab work when recommended

Preventive care helps catch issues early. If you have questions about your liver health, your primary care provider is here to help. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

🏥 ER or Primary Care, Where Should You Go?

Your Primary Care Provider (P*P) at RVPCS is the best choice for most everyday health needs, including:
• Colds & fevers
• Diabetes management
• Annual check-ups & preventive care
• Sprains & minor cuts

🚑 Go to the ER or call 911 for life-threatening emergencies, such as:
• Chest pain
• Trouble breathing
• Stroke symptoms
• Seizures
• Sudden severe pain
• High fever in infants

💰 Cost Matters
ER visits are much more expensive. RVPCS offers affordable care with a Sliding Fee Discount Program, is Medicare-friendly, and accepts Arkansas Medicaid.

🩺 When it’s not an emergency, choose primary care.
We’re here to help you stay healthy, without the ER bill.

🥑January 5th = National Keto Day

You’ve probably heard of the keto diet, but what is it, and is it actually healthy? 🤔

🍳 What is keto?
The ketogenic (keto) diet is a very low-carb, high-fat eating plan 🥩🥑 that encourages the body to enter ketosis, where it burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates 🍞.

❤️ Is keto healthy?
Keto can help some people in certain situations, like short-term weight loss or specific medical needs. However, it’s not for everyone. Because it limits many food groups 🍎🌾, it can be hard to stick with and may lead to nutrient gaps if not carefully planned.

🥗 Is keto healthier than other diets?
There’s no one-size-fits-all diet 👥. For many people, a balanced and sustainable approach, including lean proteins 🍗, fruits 🍓, vegetables 🥦, whole grains 🌾, and healthy fats, supports long-term health better than highly restrictive diets.

The healthiest diet is one that fits your body, your health needs, and your lifestyle. Before starting keto, or any major diet change, talk with a healthcare provider 📞.

🌿 RVPCS Health Tip of the Week

Small habits = big health wins.

Did you know just 10–15 minutes of movement a day can help:

✅ Lower stress
✅ Improve heart health
✅ Boost energy and mood

It doesn’t have to be the gym, try a short walk, stretching while watching TV, or parking a little farther away. If you’re walking outside in the cold ❄️, be sure to bundle up, dress in layers, and cover your hands and ears to stay warm and safe. Every step counts toward a healthier you.

📊 Getting 150 minutes of physical activity per week (that’s about 20 minutes a day) can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and improve overall health. Source: (CDC)

And if you’re ready to take the next step, our River Valley Primary Care Services team is here to help with preventive care, wellness visits, and support that fits your life. 🩺
