Canine Partners For Life (CPL) is a nonprofit organization located in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. CPL trains and places dogs to assist individuals with a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities. CPL trains full-service dogs to provide physical assistance to their partner 24 hours a day, both at home and in public environments (for example, individuals with disabilities caused by ALS (Lou

Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, paralysis, amputation, and more). CPL also places full-service seizure-alert dogs to detect and alert to upcoming seizure activity. Finally, CPL places home-companion dogs with special-needs children or the elderly to work in the home environment. Each dog receives training adapted to meet the specific needs of its human partner. Skills may include how to retrieve items; operate light switches, elevator buttons, door openers; tug a laundry basket and put laundry in/out of the machine; roll someone over in bed to prevent sores; pay cashiers; open and close doors; assist with dressing and undressing; help an unsteady walker negotiate bumpy terrain or stairs; and a wide variety of other tasks. Just as important, the dogs provide a constant source of love and comfort. Please visit www.k94life.org or phone (610) 869-4902.

For our final What’s My Name Wednesday of the month, we are featuring Buttercups’ most recent litter, Lenny and Felix!

Lenny was named by Judy in honor of her father, a meaningful tribute that now lives on through the gift of independence that this sweet puppy will one day provide for someone.

The name Felix was chosen by Michael and Linda, who chose to name a CPL puppy after the grandson. What a common theme this month – naming puppies after those who hold a special place in your heart!

For our final Transformation Tuesday this month, we are featuring Molly! Molly has always been described as smart, and eager to learn, even as a 10-week-old puppy! From the moment she began training, Molly showed a natural curiosity and enthusiasm for new challenges. She quickly discovered that learning was fun, and that excitement has carried with her into advanced training. Whether she’s practicing new skills or refining familiar ones, Molly approaches each task with focus and determination. Her ability to quickly understand expectations, combined with her willingness to work, makes her a joy for her trainers to handle. Molly’s steady progress and positive attitude highlight her strong potential, and she continues to build the skills that will support her future partner.

EDS and HSD are complex, multi-systemic connective tissue conditions caused by genetic changes that affective connective tissue. There are different types of Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, each with their own unique set of symptoms, features, and diagnostic criteria. These conditions can also be coupled with instability, injury, pain, fatigue, headaches, autonomic dysfunction, and more.

Last week we hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Event at CPL, where we played Bingo, Trivia, and a classic Canine Mystery Whodunit. The evening was filled with lots of laughs, teamwork, and of course, four-legged friends. We are so grateful to have dedicated volunteers that contribute to our program in countless ways, making the miracle of independence possible through every dog they interact with. Thank you to our volunteers who were able to join us last week!

This week for What’s my Name Wednesday, we are highlighting the last puppy from Chewie’s third litter, Barrett. Barrett was named by Carol, whose son was a previous CPL recipient. When asked about the background of Barrett’s name, Carol shared, “The dogs are devoted to their job and the humans cherish their partners.” We cannot wait to see what Barrett accomplishes in his training!

Our featured pup for this Transformation Tuesday is Pete! Early on, Pete found the world exciting, sometimes letting his go-getter puppy behavior get the best of him and greeting his favorite people with excited jumps. Through consistent, positive reinforcement, Pete has worked through those puppy-like behaviors and has learned that keeping all four feet on the floor brings big rewards! Today, Pete works with his trainer and 2nd Year Training Home on maintaining those behaviors, and keeping his composure in novel environments, showing that steady progress leads to meaningful transformations. Pete is now a solid and reliable boy, who completes his skills methodically, proving his knowledge and understanding of what he’s learned during his training. Way to go Pete!

This week for Transformation Tuesday, we are featuring Abby. Abby has always been a pup who first tries things at her own pace, thinking things through before jumping in with all four feet. Though Abby’s community puppy raiser kept her busy, with exciting outings, play dates with other CPL puppies, and more, Abby enjoyed the scenic route. Her training came naturally, but she enjoyed learning at a leisurely pace, making sure to soak every bit of skills practice and environmental stimulation that she could – all to prepare her for a future in service work. Now in her advanced training, Abby enjoys any opportunity to show off the skills she’s worked so hard to learn, proud of herself and the progress she’s made. We are so proud of Abby for the progress she’s made, and continues to make in her advanced training!
