Canine Partners For Life (CPL) is a nonprofit organization located in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. CPL trains and places dogs to assist individuals with a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities. CPL trains full-service dogs to provide physical assistance to their partner 24 hours a day, both at home and in public environments (for example, individuals with disabilities caused by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, paralysis, amputation, and more). CPL also places full-service seizure-alert dogs to detect and alert to upcoming seizure activity. Finally, CPL places home-companion dogs with special-needs children or the elderly to work in the home environment. Each dog receives training adapted to meet the specific needs of its human partner. Skills may include how to retrieve items; operate light switches, elevator buttons, door openers; tug a laundry basket and put laundry in/out of the machine; roll someone over in bed to prevent sores; pay cashiers; open and close doors; assist with dressing and undressing; help an unsteady walker negotiate bumpy terrain or stairs; and a wide variety of other tasks. Just as important, the dogs provide a constant source of love and comfort. Please visit www.k94life.org or phone (610) 869-4902.

Here at CPL, we have volunteers on campus almost every day walking our dogs. From the heat of the summer to the cold winter mornings, our walking volunteers are always happy to spend time on campus with a four-legged friend. January is National Walk Your Dog Month – a great reminder to get out there and get your steps in. Show us your walking buddies in the comments!

Jack has an intractable seizure disorder, meaning his seizures cannot be controlled with medication. He experiences seizures about once a week, often falling and injuring himself. Once even resulting in a fractured back. After exhausting every available epilepsy medication without success, Jack’s family began the search for a service dog.

After 3 ½ years, Jack was matched with Dassi in the summer of 2025. “Their match was the happiest day of mine and Jack’s life,” his mom shares.

Every day, Jack and his service dog, Dassi, walk a mile to school together. Jack’s family now has far greater peace of mind. “We feel better about him walking to school alone, showering, or simply being by himself. We used to worry constantly that he would fall. He still might, but it happens far less often because Dassi alerts us when he’s vulnerable.” Dassi makes Jack feel safe and special, and he says his favorite thing about her is that she is his best friend. Jack’s mom believes Dassi’s alerts may have prevented seizures from occurring in the first place.
“CPL heard Jack’s needs and truly listened. CPL is a community—everyone encourages you, stays connected, and genuinely wants you to succeed.” Thank you, Jack and Dassi, for sharing your CPL story!

Our puppy raisers took full advantage of Longwood’s holiday display for a training session with Kate, Gracie, and Buffy earlier this month and explored all that the gardens had to offer. From holiday light displays to colorful plants of all different smells, there was plenty for the puppies to look at and potentially be distracted by, but these girls impressed with their loose-leash walking, and handler focus during their outing.

Special thanks to Jim Coarse from Moonloop Photography for tagging along and capturing these moments for us!

Billy has been on quite the journey at CPL, but one thing has always remained steady – his willingness to work, and his sweet personality! Billy has grown from a lovable, quiet puppy, to a boisterous, eager service dog who has no qualms about showing you how to get the job done! Billy puts everything he can into his job – showing off his skills and smarts whenever he can. Billy also exhibits an innate ability to alert to oncoming medical episodes, with a true drive to be an alert dog, and keep his person safe. We are so proud of Billy and know that his future is bright.

Fritzi and Lovey and their litters of puppies headed to SCI-Somerset for the remainder of their weaning and whelping just over a week ago. We are grateful to have a strong whelping program at SCI-Somerset with dedicated inmate handlers who take the care of our breeder moms and young puppies very seriously. Thank you to all of our whelping volunteers at CPL who helped with these litters, and to our inmate handlers and prison staff who have now taken over their care!

It’s that time of year again, when our kennel dogs are getting ready to head to volunteer homes for the holidays. Jody was eager to lend a paw as our kennel staff got everyone packed up and ready to go! Thank you to all of our volunteers who have opened their homes to our dogs this holiday season!

Once a spunky, talkative puppy, whose excitement sometimes got ahead of her, Dazey has grown in both confidence and skill as she’s moved into her advanced training. Spending her days working with CPL’s working dog trainers, Dazey impresses with her ease of handling, mild temperament, willingness to work, and eagerness to please her handler. We are so proud of the service dog Dazey is becoming and cannot wait to see what the future holds for her!
