Canine Partners For Life (CPL) is a nonprofit organization located in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. CPL trains and places dogs to assist individuals with a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities. CPL trains full-service dogs to provide physical assistance to their partner 24 hours a day, both at home and in public environments (for example, individuals with disabilities caused by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, paralysis, amputation, and more). CPL also places full-service seizure-alert dogs to detect and alert to upcoming seizure activity. Finally, CPL places home-companion dogs with special-needs children or the elderly to work in the home environment. Each dog receives training adapted to meet the specific needs of its human partner. Skills may include how to retrieve items; operate light switches, elevator buttons, door openers; tug a laundry basket and put laundry in/out of the machine; roll someone over in bed to prevent sores; pay cashiers; open and close doors; assist with dressing and undressing; help an unsteady walker negotiate bumpy terrain or stairs; and a wide variety of other tasks. Just as important, the dogs provide a constant source of love and comfort. Please visit www.k94life.org or phone (610) 869-4902.

This week for What’s my Name Wednesday, we are featuring Fido, the purple collar puppy from Buttercups’ litter, who is currently being trained at SCI-Benner Township. Fido was named by Lew and Lynn, who chose the name in honor of a cross-country trip they traveled, in which they hosted a “Finding Fido” trivia game to benefit CPL. We are so excited for Fido to continue on the legacy of this gift as he continues on his service dog journey!

One of the most important things that CPL puppies learn from a young age is handler focus. As they train to become service and companion dogs, these puppies learn that their handler should be their primary focus, despite distraction, crowds, and other dogs and people. Puppy class is a great way for our puppies in training to practice their handler focus, ignoring the other puppies and their handlers, and focusing on the handler at the end of their leash.

Maestro and Kazan did a great job focusing on their handlers at a recent puppy class. Great job pups!

Worlds collide at CPL when our whelping volunteers and puppy raisers come together for a puppy visit when our litters return from SCI-Somerset before going home with their puppy raisers. These volunteers join together to share stories from the whelping box as puppy raisers learn a bit about their puppy’s personality from the volunteers who know them best!

We are grateful to be able to continue this tradition with each of our litters, and always look forward to sharing this time with our volunteers. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us!

We’re back with another week of What’s my Name Wednesday, this week featuring Titus. Titus was named by Annette, who chose the name for a CPL puppy due to the Latin origin, meaning "title of honor". The name also sometimes refers to “Titan,” another name which means “person or thing of very great strength, intellect, or importance.”

We are sure that Titus will live up to his name as he continues on his service dog journey!
