Canine Partners For Life (CPL) is a nonprofit organization located in Cochranville, Pennsylvania. CPL trains and places dogs to assist individuals with a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities. CPL trains full-service dogs to provide physical assistance to their partner 24 hours a day, both at home and in public environments (for example, individuals with disabilities caused by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, paralysis, amputation, and more). CPL also places full-service seizure-alert dogs to detect and alert to upcoming seizure activity. Finally, CPL places home-companion dogs with special-needs children or the elderly to work in the home environment. Each dog receives training adapted to meet the specific needs of its human partner. Skills may include how to retrieve items; operate light switches, elevator buttons, door openers; tug a laundry basket and put laundry in/out of the machine; roll someone over in bed to prevent sores; pay cashiers; open and close doors; assist with dressing and undressing; help an unsteady walker negotiate bumpy terrain or stairs; and a wide variety of other tasks. Just as important, the dogs provide a constant source of love and comfort. Please visit www.k94life.org or phone (610) 869-4902.

April 2nd is recognized annually as World Autism Awareness Day. This year, the campaign aims to move beyond just awareness to true acceptance and celebration of neurodiversity. The World Autism Awareness Day campaign focuses on fostering inclusivity and understanding of people with autism in education, workplaces, and communities.

CPL Home Companion dogs can support individuals with autism in many meaningful ways — offering loving companionship, serving as steady emotional anchors, providing calming tactile stimulation and deep pressure therapy, and helping foster connection within the community.

April is National Volunteer Month! CPL volunteers show up in countless ways, making life-changing partnerships possible. From whelping litters and caring for our breeder moms, to raising puppies, transporting dogs to and from our Prison Puppy Raising Programs, opening their home to a kennel dog for the weekend, spending time in the play yard or cuddle room, our volunteers support our dogs at every stage of training.

Our organization would not be the same, and our mission would not be possible, without you. Thank you!

Last month, CPL staff and volunteers spent time at Linvilla Orchards with some of our kennel dogs, practicing around farm animals, walking in tight spaces, and practicing their skills in public. Our volunteers and dogs did a great job navigating a challenging environment, while remaining focused on the tasks at hand, making for a great training trip for everyone involved. Great job, volunteers and pups!

Have you ever wondered what puppy class looks like at Canine Partners for Life? Picture a room full of wagging tails, eager puppies, and dedicated volunteers, all working together with one goal in mind: helping future service dogs build the skills they need to change someone’s life someday. At puppy class, we don’t just focus on “sit” and “down,” our puppies practice polite greetings, walking nicely on leash, and learning to focus around distractions.

Our Program Team coaches our community puppy raisers through each step, offering guidance, encouragement, and problem-solving tips. Learning happens at both ends of the leash! Most importantly, puppy class is where foundations are built – where every treat, every repetition, and every small success adds up to something big.

Thank you to Jim Coarse, from Moonloop Photography, for joining one of our recent puppy classes to capture these special moments!

Today is World Down Syndrome Day, a day used to raise awareness for the rights and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome.

In support of World Down Syndrome Day, show us how you Rock Your Socks in the comments, just like Adams and Barnabus. Mismatched socks were chosen as the symbolic representation of Down Syndrome awareness, because when our chromosomes are pictured and stained, they look like a pair of socks. Wearing mismatched socks is to promote the celebration of differences.

Happy International Day of Happiness – a perfect excuse to celebrate all of the things in your life that make you the happiest. We asked our kennel dogs what makes them happy, and some of their responses were: treats, working with my trainer, seeing my puppy raiser, a sunny day on the play yard, training trips, spending time in the office, and weekends with a volunteer! Happy Friday!
