ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY FOR SLEEP APNEA MAY HELP SLOW THE ONSET OF ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE. A recent study published in the scientific journal Geriatrics found that the use of oral sleep apnea appliances in patients who snore not only helped decrease snoring, but also helped to improve levels of cognitive impairment characteristic of Alzheimer's Disease. According to an article from the University of Texas Center for Brain Health describing the research, "After the intervention period, cognitive function – especially in the domain of memory – no longer differed between healthy individuals and individuals with mild cognitive impairment." Yet another benefit of oral appliance therapy!

If you would like to see whether you (or someone you know and/or love) could benefit from this life-saving and life-enhancing treatment, please call our office today at 410-527-9237 for a free, no-obligation consultation!

A multidisciplinary team of researchers discovered that an oral appliance not only improves breathing rate during sleep, but also appears to reverse cognitive impairment.

ARE YOU ABOUT TO GET YOUR COVID-19 VACCINE? MAKE SURE YOU GET A COUPLE OF GOOD NIGHTS' SLEEP!

A recent study in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine sought to identify periods prior to or after vaccination where sleep may have a stronger influence on vaccine effectiveness. The findings showed that shorter sleep duration on the two nights before the vaccination was associated with fewer antibodies---and thus lower vaccine effectiveness---1 and 4 months later. (While the study was done with an influenza flu vaccine, it's reasonable to believe that the same would hold true for the COVID-19 vaccine as well.) The study concludes that the findings support an "association between sleep duration and antibody responses to the influenza vaccine and suggest that perhaps sleep on nights prior to vaccination are critical."

Here are some recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for healthy sleep:

-Create a good sleeping environment---a comfortable bed in a dark, quiet room.

-Make sure that your room isn't too warm or too cold. In general, having a room temperature around 68 degrees is best for sleep, but if you (and your bed partner) are more comfortable with the room slightly cooler or warmer, adjust the temperature accordingly.

-Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends and vacations.

-Avoid taking naps if possible. Limit napping time to less than 1 hour, and don't nap too late in the day (i.e. after 3 PM or so, depending on your schedule.)

-Avoid caffeine after lunchtime and don't drink alcohol within 4-6 hours of going to bed. Foods that upset your stomach and heavy meals late in the day can also interfere with healthy sleep.

-Regular exercise can help you to sleep better, but make sure that you finish exercising at least 6 hours before

-Stop using all electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime. The artificial light generated by a cell phone, computer, tablet, etc. can disrupt your body's natural sleep cues.

-Develop rituals that help you to relax each night before bedtime such as a warm bath or listening to some relaxing music for a few minutes.

-If you frequently find yourself worrying at bedtime, come up with a specific time during the day to write these worries down and get them out of your system. (Chances are you won't be able to do anything about them when you're sleeping anyway!)

-If you're unable to fall asleep or stay asleep within 20 minutes, get up. Try a quiet activity for a little while (NOT screen-based, like your phone, computer or TV) and return to bed when you feel sleepy.

We hope these tips help you to get a better night's sleep. If you are having issues with daytime sleepiness, fatigue or snoring---whether it's yours or your bed partner's---please contact our office at 410-527-9237 or email us at healthiersleepsolutions@gmail.com

OBSTRUCIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA) INCREASES THE RISK OF COVID-19 INFECTION. A recently published study in the journal Sleep and Breathing found that patients with OSA experienced approximately 8-fold greater risk for COVID-19 infection compared to a similar age population receiving care in a large socioeconomically and racially diverse healthcare system. Among patients with COVID-19 infection, OSA was associated with increased risk of hospitalization and approximately double the risk of developing respiratory failure.
