Incentive Spirometer VS. The Breather

The Breather is a respiratory muscle trainer. As you breathe in and out of the Breather, it functions as a therapeutic exerciser for the lungs and breathing muscles.

An incentive Spirometer reminds you to take in a deep breath and some even use it as a tool to measure their gross lung volumes. However, while Incentive Spirometry encourages deep breathing, there is no resistance to the intake of air through the device, so it does not strengthen the respiratory muscles.

What is the difference between The Breather and an inspiratory muscle training (IMT) device?

The primary difference is that The Breather is both an inspiratory and expiratory muscle trainer. The combination of both IMT and EMT has been demonstrated to be more effective than just one alone.

The Breather is also highly customizable. With 6 inhalation and 5 exhalation settings, The Breather can be finely attuned to each patient's needs.

FAQ 54 --> Research has shown that respiratory muscle training (RMT) improves respiratory muscle strength.

Children and adults suffering from asthma should benefit from using the Breather by being able to clear the airways more efficiently due to increased expiratory muscle strength.

RMT also reduces the frequency of asthma attacks, severity and frequency of diurnal and nocturnal symptoms and perception of dyspnea.

Regular RMT by using the Breather should result in reduced need for the use of your rescue bronchodilator.

Our Story

The Breather is the first drug-free, evidence-based Respiratory Muscle Training device, designed to serve patients with COPD, CHF, Dysphagia, Stroke, Hypertension, Parkinson’s, and Neuromuscular Diseases.

Since 1980, we’ve been creating Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) devices. We serve medical practitioners and their patients in the pulmonary and speech pathology industries. Our first device, The Breather, is a RMT for both inspiratory and expiratory muscle training.

It was invented in 1979 by our Chief Clinical Officer, Peggy Nicholson, a former Respiratory Therapist. It was the first device of its kind. Since it was created, more than 60 patents have referenced The Breather’s simple yet effective design. Read the latest science and proof of efficacy.

We’re now continuing the tradition of being first to market with our newest invention, Breather II. It’s an intelligent device providing a combination of spirometry diagnostics, therapeutics, and remote patient monitoring. Its aim is to improve patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs.
