When I tell clients I can’t spray tan over a sunburn… this is why ☀️
A sunburn is actually skin damage not just a little redness. It’s your body’s response to UV exposure, where the top layer of your skin has been injured.
Here’s the science behind it:
Your skin naturally goes through a process called cell turnover, where dead skin cells shed and new ones come to the surface. When you’re sunburned, that process speeds up because your body is trying to repair the damage.
Spray tans work through a reaction called Maillard reaction the tanning solution (DHA) binds to the amino acids in your outermost layer of skin (the epidermis).
But here’s the problem:
If that top layer is damaged and about to shed faster than normal, your tan has nothing stable to hold onto.
That means:
• Uneven, patchy results
• Rapid fading (sometimes within days)
• Blotchy peeling — even if you think you don’t peel
And about that — everyone sheds skin. Not all peeling is visible, but the process is happening whether you see flakes or not.
Bottom line:
Spraying over a sunburn doesn’t just affect your results — it works against your skin’s healing process.
For the best, longest-lasting glow, wait until your skin is fully healed, calm, and back to normal 🤍
