Bee Happy Raw Wildflower Honey
2021 review and beyond !
What started out as a slow year ended up being a great comeback fourth quarter win , win!
In saying that we always give God the glory for the privilege to keep our honeybees!
Compared to most beekeepers, Terry, Edward and myself collectively could probably only fill a thimble half full of knowledge about being great beekeepers, yet by Gods grace and our ever growing appetite to be better beekeepers we grow in confidence and child like amazement as we observe and participate in the lives of our 15 colonies.
This being our 5th season of keeping bees,we had projected it at the beginning of the season as our first profitable season were we actually could glean money for personal usages. However it was not meant to be, yet we praise God that it was our second best harvest total falling only 5 pounds short of our 2020 all time best of 650 pounds of liquid gold from our girls! (645 lbs.)
This years late season gains did allow
us to repair my aging 1996 Ford Ranger ( twice) plus add a freezer to flash freeze frames with honey comb to kill off any disease or insects.
We also were once again able to reinvest in new equipment such as new hive boxes and wood to build other needed equipment so that we can expand our operations in 2022. ; (we now build 85 percent of our equipment)
We are also are very excited that Edward our oldest son has joined forces with us to learn all the ins and outs of beekeeping and brings a fresh approach to promoting our business with Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook videos that he posts . Eventually, lord willing , Edward will at some point down the road take full control of what we hope by then will be a thriving cottage industry.
Edward has been of great value to me in the field as well , at 66 those honey laden boxes get pretty heavy especially wearing a full bee suit. Thankfully Edward is not allergic to the stings like I am so he can choose to wear a suit or not , all depending on our bees temperament on the days we visit their homes.
Terry still holds a job at Pinch A Penny Pools so her hive time is limited, yet her love of beekeeping has not waned and her desire to do beekeeping fulltime grows equally with our desires to bring it to the next level.
In 2022 we hope to increase our colonies to 30 ( Edward’s desire is 400!) by splitting strong existing colonies , some as many as two times, this will result in Edward keeping close watch over at least half of those colonies, discerning their status and health and what to do when, and when to just let our bees do their own thing, sometimes we as beekeepers interfere a bit too much in their daily routines.
( overbearing parents?) haha!
We also will be exploring new venues to sell our honey, our wax clothe bowl covers, wax, honey, essential oil lip balms and Edward’s beeswax beard and mustache balms.
We will also be experimenting with producing comb honey in various ways.
So all in all 2021 in the long run helped us gain key insights on how to move forward and how to be the best possible beekeepers while honoring our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
We will ever be thankful to Peter Andres Terrys brother who introduced us to beekeeping over 5 years ago, Peter still keeps bees up in the outskirts of Saskatoon , Canada, and is a very successful keeper even despite the harsh cold winters.
We also would be amiss not to thank our daughter Deanna for her God given talent and creativity with her camera work,( featured in The Senior Life layout) and her willingness to bring us oldschoolers up to date in what looks good for labels, for our products, and to give us a fresh look. Also hoping , praying one day she might join our forces at beekeeping and management!
Also here at home , we would never have been able to grow into a cottage industry if it were not for all the great mentoring we have received from Clifton Best of Best Honey and president and founder of Brevard Backyard Beekeepers. We glean a wealth of info on the first Thursday of every month at 6:15 p.m. at The Agricultural extension center on Lake Ave. in Cocoa Fl. All are welcome, membership is not required.
Clifton has also visited our hives on occasions when we were clueless to different scenarios we didn’t understand, this despite his heavy schedule of his professional bee removal business and maintaining his every growing colonies.
We hope this catches you up on what we are up to and our vision for the year to come and the praise report of our successful 2021 season!
From Terry, Edward , and myself, we pray you will have a very blessed 2022
