🇺🇸🤧 Cough is not a disease.
It is a natural defense mechanism the body uses to clear the airways.
Here are 4 essential things every parent should know:
1️⃣ The “Viral Cycle”
It is completely normal for a healthy child to have 8 to 12 respiratory infections per year.
Since each cold can last up to 2 weeks, it may seem like they are “always sick.”
In most cases, these are simply different viruses one after another and this is part of how the immune system develops.
2️⃣ Dry cough vs. productive cough
• A dry cough at the beginning is usually more irritating.
• A productive (wet) cough happens when the body is moving and clearing mucus.
⚠️ Important: Cough suppressants are rarely recommended in pediatrics because they can prevent mucus from being cleared.
If a child doesn’t cough, mucus can build up.
3️⃣ The important role of nasal saline rinses
Often, the best “remedy” for cough is clearing the nose.
Postnasal drip (mucus draining from the nose to the throat) is one of the main causes of coughing especially at night when the child lies down.
💧 Saline drops and frequent nasal cleaning are your best allies.
4️⃣ Warning signs When to seek urgent care:
🚨 Trouble breathing: ribs pulling in (“retractions”) or belly moving with significant effort.
🚨 Wheezing: a whistling sound when breathing.
🚨 Persistent fever: not improving with fever reducers or lasting more than 3–4 days.
🚨 Lethargy: child extremely tired, weak, or unresponsive even after the fever goes down.
✨ Remember: coughing helps keep the lungs clear.
The focus should be on your child’s comfort hydration, nasal care, and close observation not just silencing the symptom.
