International Women’s Day often celebrates strong women.

But in clinical work, I see something more complex.

Many women who are labeled strong have simply become highly adapted to pressure.

They anticipate problems.
Manage relationships.
Carry emotional labor.
Maintain stability.

And they do it well.

But over time, the nervous system begins to show signs of strain:

• anxiety
• burnout
• irritability
• emotional shutdown
• chronic overthinking

Not because they are failing.

Because the system has been running in high-responsibility mode for too long.

One shift I work on with many women in treatment is this:

Competence does not require self-abandonment.

You can remain capable
without carrying everything alone.

Having self-compassion does not mean you lack discipline.

It means you can acknowledge that something is hard
without adding shame on top of it.

For many people, the shame comes from earlier conditioning.

Somewhere along the way, you learned that struggling meant:
• you weren’t good enough
• you were falling behind
• or you needed to push harder to be acceptable.

Those beliefs become your internal voice.

So when something is difficult, the mind responds with criticism instead of support.

The nervous system interprets that criticism as threat.

When that happens, the body shifts into protection:
• defensiveness
• shutdown
• avoidance
• overworking
• emotional exhaustion

None of those states support growth.

Growth slows.
Stress increases.
Burnout follows.

Change becomes more possible when the internal voice shifts from punishing to supportive.

Self-compassion is not lowering the bar.

It is removing shame so the nervous system can stay regulated long enough to actually change.

Before setting new goals, ask yourself:
What do I actually need right now?

Self-compassion is not indulgence.
It is the ability to lead yourself without shame.

Just finished one session.
Waiting on the next.
And all I’m thinking is… a lot of us are out here “functioning” but not really feeling okay.

You know how many women I sit with who say:

“I’m doing everything I’m supposed to, but I still feel off.”

It’s not in your head.
You’re just carrying more than people see.
And you don’t have to keep holding it all alone. womensmentalhealth blackmentalhealth emotionalsupport

Happy Holidays from J&J Psychiatric and Mental Wellness ✨

I want to take a moment to say thank you to my clients for trusting me, for showing up for yourself, and for doing the quiet, often unseen work of caring for your mental health this year.

And fir everyone, if this season feels heavy instead of joyful, please know this too:
You’re not behind.
You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re not alone.

The holidays can bring connection and celebration — and grief, stress, loneliness, pressure, or exhaustion. All of that belongs. All of that is valid.

Wherever you find yourself right now, celebrating, surviving, resting, or just getting through the day, I’m wishing you gentleness, compassion, and moments of ease in whatever way you need them most.

Be kind to yourself. That counts as progress too 🤍

You don’t have to prove your strength by staying in survival mode.
This time of year can bring invisible pressure — to show up, smile, shop, support everyone around you… but who’s holding space for you?
In my practice, we pause the performance.
And we start to rebuild something sustainable . #

If Sunday is your only quiet moment—don’t waste it over-planning the week.
Instead, ask yourself:
🫶 What did I survive this week?
🧠 What is my body still holding?
🌬 What do I need to exhale?

This is nervous system care. This is mental health care.
And yes, it’s okay to need help with it. ☀️

If you’ve been feeling like people are pulling away, I want you to know something:

Sometimes when you keep saying “I’m fine,” people start to believe you.
They stop checking in.
They assume you’ve got it all under control — even when you’re not okay.

But I see it all the time in my work as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner:
Pretending can feel safer in the moment, but over time, it leaves you feeling more isolated.

If this resonates, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to keep carrying this alone.

You don’t have to explain it perfectly.
You just have to start being honest — with yourself first.

December isn’t just about finishing strong.

It’s about getting honest with what’s no longer working.

🔁 The overthinking
🔁 The emotional shutdown
🔁 The pretending to be “fine”

At J&J Psychiatric and Mental Wellness, we offer trauma-informed, holistic psychiatric care, because healing isn’t one-size-fits-all.

This month, choose healing that’s rooted.

Slow. Steady. Sustainable.

No one tells you how hard it is to heal.
To open the door for peace again after years of protecting yourself with pain. Healing is not just feeling better — it is unlearning the habits that kept you alive in darkness.

🌿 We are taught how to survive, but not how to soften again.
How to trust again.
How to receive love without flinching.
How to believe that blessings can actually be meant for you.

☀️ But life has an unseen wisdom: when you slowly stop resisting, the world slowly stops hurting.
The heart knows how to rebuild itself when you allow it to breathe again.

🍃 So don’t rush.
Don’t pressure your soul to be perfect.
Just open the window a little.
Let the light in.

A softer life always exists. And one day, without forcing, you realize — the world didn’t change, you did... 🌿

You’re not “too sensitive.”
You’re running on too little sleep, too many tabs open in your brain, and a nervous system that never got a break.

Sunday nights hit hard because they mirror what you’ve been holding all week.

And if no one’s told you:
It’s not weak to rest. It’s wise.

Calmness isn’t a personality trait.
It’s a nervous system state.

We talk a lot about mental health care.
But here’s what doesn’t get enough credit:

💤 Sleep.

Sleep improves:
▫️ Focus
▫️ Emotional regulation
▫️ Hormonal balance
▫️ Recovery from stress & trauma.

Sleep isn’t a luxury.
It’s literally one of the most protective things you can do for your brain.

It improves your mood.
Regulates your nervous system.
Helps your body heal.

You’re not lazy for needing more rest
you’re human.
