The holiday season can be magical, but it can also be heavy. As a therapist who works with children and teens, I am reminded every year that not every young person is walking into this season with joy. Some are navigating family conflict, grief, anxiety, or complicated memories.

If this time feels hard—for you or your child—you’re not alone. It’s okay if the holidays don’t feel “happy.” What matters most is accepting our feelings, supporting others, and creating small moments of connection with those we love.

When our kids misbehave, how often do we get frustrated, punish, or blame them for their behavior?

What if we tried looking at it differently?

I tell the parents I work with that all behavior has an underlying need — our job is to uncover what the behavior is trying to tell us.

If children had the tools to communicate their needs, they would use them! As parents, our role is to teach them those tools, not punish them for not having them yet.

Sometimes all our kids need is a little patience, a little guidance, and a lot of love. 🩵
