Recently we fit Matthew with a Phonak Sky M-90 hearing aid. He seems to like them and was immediately more alert and responsive to sound. Even though Matthew only has a mild to moderate hearing loss, it's important that he has hearing aids to ensure that he has access to sound for speech and language development. CROS stands for “Contralateral Routing of Signal” and is a fancy way to say it takes sound on the side of the poor ear, and puts it into the ear with better hearing. A golden retrieve with ear problems, how could we not support her on Giving Tuesday!

Today is GIVING TUESDAY! With your support we can save more Silvi's! Sweet Silvi, a beautiful 6-year-old Golden Retriever arrived to GRFR’s care with acute "cauliflower ear" a very is painful condition caused by years of untreated ear infections. OUCH!

Her CT report confirmed this has caused severe and permanent changes to her ear canals (calcifications) that will not be responsive to any medical treatment. As a result, a TECA/BO is going to be necessary on both ears. What’s that?

The term TECA-BO is an abbreviation for Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy. This surgery involves the complete removal of the ear canal and tympanic bulla (middle ear), leaving only the ear flap (pinna) remaining. This is a very intense undertaking (time, money, invasiveness) however GRFR will pay for the procedure at an authorized GRFR vet and our dedicated team of volunteers will schedule all appointments for Silvi.
Overall, the prognosis for pets receiving a TECA-BO is very good. The pet is relieved of a source of chronic pain and inflammation, while the pet owner is relieved of the odor and daily cleaning/medication associated with chronic ear infections.
