To all the mothers.
I see how much you carry.
The invisible load. The late-night worries. The deep love that holds it all together.

This Mother’s Day, I want you to hear this:
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to need.
You are allowed to be more than what you do for others.

Holidays can be very difficult for a lot of people as many are alone and struggling. Please remember this when you are greeting a cashier, waiting in line at the store or saying your holiday wishes to colleagues. Struggles can be very silent and can be masked with smiley faces and jovial laughter. Please be mindful of this and proceed with kindness and grace during this stressful time to others. Your kind behavior can have a great impact whether big or small.

As a Couples therapist I am always trying to determine the best tools to give my clients. I have heard from many couples that their partners don’t listen, have a difficult time talking about their feelings and no longer enjoy each other’s company or have fun. The formula for success has have many facets but the overarching theme is to carve the time to reflect your feelings to one another, listen with out defending and work through problems with compromise and understanding. Relationships take work and self reflection to bring about healthy dynamics!

The question I am bringing to the forefront is “who is checking on the mothers?”

It is safe to say that everyone has been affected by the pandemic and the damage it has caused. Mothers, caregivers are among those. They have had the balance of home schooling, working from home and at the same time juggling all the responsibilities that motherhood naturally assigns.

We should all take a moment and check in with those mothers. So if you are a mother, know a mother, or see someone struggling with the balancing act, please stop and take notice and “check in”.

As a therapist, we see the impact and it truly takes all of us to support one another.

As your turn the page on 2020, it’s time to see what we write for ourselves in 2021.

For the past 7 years, I have thrown out the long lists of resolutions and decided to focus my energy on a “word”. A word that defines where my focus will be toward and where my energy will lie.

Once your word is defined then the next steps is to find ways to “foster” that word. It’s as if you have it cradled in your hand as a precious stone and care for it every day of the new year!

Ask yourselves, “is this action or decision supporting my word?”

No matter what you determine to be your word, please remind yourselves to allow grace when practicing it, because one word that is universal in the New Year is Love. Spread it, receive it, and most importantly give to yourselves!
