These two kind souls, were some of the first people that made me feel welcome in the Coeur d'Alene community.

I first called Chris Lovejoy, pictured middle, to inquire about her yoga classes. Being the friendly person she is, she asked about my life and learned that I was an acupuncturist. That led her to invite me to the community Qi Gong class that Dwight Dansereau, pictured left, offers every Wednesday. They make a great team in leading the class.

I'm honored to know them and wanted to recognize their community- minded efforts. They seem to always be bringing people together, whether it's through Yoga, Qi Gong, spreading the word about acupuncture, or just being the friendly people they are!

I look forward to warmer weather, when we can continue our Qi Gong practice outdoors again!

The full quote from Lao Tzu reads….

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

This is a great reminder during this seasonal change. It should prompt us to prepare for letting go. Autumn is all about letting go of things that may be holding us back.

Autumn should also spark a gratefulness for the abundance that summer provided. Remaining in a grateful spirit may be difficult on some days…

But, a great way to start is simply beginning each day thinking of 3 things that you’re thankful for.

I like to do this in prayer, thanking God for His many blessings in my life.

Reflect on your own harvest……..are you bearing fruit and how?

Acupuncture points that can be helpful during this transition from late summer into fall include points related to digestion.

👉 Stomach 20 “Receiving Fullness”: this point can be very useful for individuals that have a hard time receiving love and nurturing from others. Needling ST20 can help to open the “storehouse”, ie: our stomach, so that nourishment can be more readily received.

👉 Spleen 8 “Earth Motivator”: this point invigorates the digestion. As the name suggests, SP8 is a motivating point, not only for digestion but also for moving through emotions and helping to transform stubbornness into thoughtfulness.

Local business spotlight……. Inland Cafe & Tea

Why I love it?

1.Their teas are amazing and can have medicinal properties!

For example, their tea named “Really Rootbeer” has herbs that can assist with better digestion. It includes herbs like fennel seed, ginger root, dandelion root, sassafras, etc.

2. Their food offerings include gluten free and are made in-house!

Check out the pictures of GF Scone and finger sandwiches made with GF bread. Delicious!

3. It’s truly a space to wind down and relax! They don’t rush you and they have cozy chairs to sit in.

If you’ve been to my clinic, I have likely recommended that you check this place out. In this fast-paced world, it’s a nice place to slow down and enjoy a pot of tea.

Nutritional therapy that can be helpful during these summer months, especially if you plan to spend more time outdoors.

There are 8 basic principles in Chinese medicine by which we can differentiate patterns in the human body. The one that we will discuss, in order to help in choosing nutritional therapy that best fits our internal environment, is that of heat and cold. Just like the weather outside, our internal environment can tend toward one or the other.

Heat injury would of course be of a hot nature, because it tends to cause fever and redness of the skin. Therefore, we would choose foods that have a cooling nature.

🥒Cucumber: this can help clear heat from the body. This can be added to your water for a refreshing afternoon drink, or eaten alone as a snack

🥒Mung beans: these clear heat and drain dampness. These can be sprouted for extra nutritional benefit and added as a crunch to your sandwiches or salads. They can also be cooked with seaweed and eaten as a remedy for heat injury or hangover.

🍉Watermelon: Not only is this a tasty summertime fruit, it also clears heat, relieves thirst, and acts as a diuretic. Eat this in limited quantity is you tend towards loose stool.

🍵Green Tea: this also clears heat and drains dampness. Drink it hot to help induce sweating, to cool off after being outside. Careful if you drink it cold as cold beverages tend to extinguish the digestive fire and slow down metabolism.

If you do tend to overheat and feel a little sluggish during these hot summer days, come visit the clinic. There are some great herbal formulas and acupuncture points to assist in your recovery. Enjoy your summer and stay healthy

The ancient Chinese text, Huang Di Nei Jing, offers this advice for summer health.

1. Stay physically active, to keep the Qi from stagnating.

2. Arise early and enjoy the longer days of sunshine by retiring later in the evenings.

3. Stay happy, easygoing, and let go of any grudges.

It goes onto say that by doing these things, illness can be averted in the Fall.
