Turns out, things like your blood type (Type O is a fave), how much CO₂ you emit, body heat, exercise, and even the color of your clothes can make you a mosquito magnet!

Bite Prevention Tips:
✅ Avoid dawn/dusk
✅ Wear long, light-colored clothing
✅ Use DEET-based repellent
✅ Use fans—they hate wind
❌ Skip citronella candles (they don’t really work)

If You Get Bitten:
Use ice or hydrocortisone
Try antihistamines
Don’t scratch—it makes it worse!

Stay itch-free this summer! Questions? Call North Idaho Dermatology at (208) 665-7546.

At North Idaho Dermatology, we encourage everyone to use the ABCDE method to self-check their moles and skin spots at home. It’s a simple way to catch warning signs early:

A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t match the other? That’s a red flag.
B – Border: Watch for edges that are ragged, notched, or blurred.
C – Color: Uneven color or multiple shades (tan, brown, black, even red, white, or blue) can be a concern.
D – Diameter: Moles larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) should be checked.
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or feel could mean it’s time to see a dermatologist.

If you notice any of these signs or if something just doesn’t look right, don’t wait. Schedule an appointment with one of our experienced providers at North Idaho Dermatology at (208) 665-7546. Early detection could make all the difference.

-Vitamin A – Supports skin renewal. Sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, kale, eggs, liver.

-Omega-3s – Reduce inflammation & dryness. Salmon, sardines, mackerel, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts.

-Zinc – Helps heal & fight acne. Oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds, lentils, chickpeas.

-Selenium – Defends against sun damage. Brazil nuts, tuna, eggs, sunflower seeds.

-Collagen (and boosters) – Supports skin elasticity. Bone broth, chicken skin, collagen supplements, vitamin C-rich foods.

-Biotin (Vitamin B7) – Prevents dry, flaky skin. Eggs, sweet potatoes, almonds, salmon.

-Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – Calms redness & improves tone. Chicken, turkey, tuna, peanuts, mushrooms.

-Polyphenols (Antioxidants) – Fight free radicals. Green tea, berries, dark chocolate, red grapes.

Acne is more than just a few blemishes—it's a common skin condition that can affect your confidence and quality of life. At North Idaho Dermatology, we’re using Acne Awareness Month to help educate and support in finding real solutions.

What Causes Acne?

-Hormones: Androgens, especially during puberty or menstruation, increase oil production.

-Genetics: If acne runs in your family, you may be more prone due to larger pores or excess skin oil.

-Stress: Emotional tension can make acne worse.

-Cosmetics & Medications: Oily makeup or certain drugs like cortisone and barbiturates can trigger breakouts.

Our Board-Certified Dermatologists can help you:

-Clear up existing breakouts
-Prevent new ones
-Reduce the risk of scarring

At North Idaho Dermatology, we offer specialized aftercare like:

-Medical-grade skincare products
-Facials focused on acne and scarring

Getting a tattoo is a big decision—and so is taking care of it! Even when you go to a licensed artist and follow aftercare instructions, your skin can sometimes react in unexpected ways. Reactions can happen right away, or they might take months or even years to appear. Here’s what could be happening and what you should do if you’re experiencing a reaction:

INFECTION
When it’s likely to appear: Immediately after getting the tattoo or days/months later.
Signs to watch for:
-Redness that worsens or spreads
-Ongoing pain or worsening pain
-Rash of itchy, red bumps
-Fever, chills, or shivering
-Pus or open sores in the tattoo

If you notice these signs, see a doctor or board-certified dermatologist ASAP. Early treatment can save your health and your tattoo!

INK ALLERGY
When it’s likely to appear: At any time, even years later!
Signs of a reaction:
-Redness and swelling
-Itchiness
-Small pimple-like bumps, raised patches, or deep lumps
-Blisters or crusting

Serious reactions need immediate medical attention! For mild/moderate reactions, tell your tattoo artist and visit a dermatologist if symptoms persist over 1-2 weeks.

TEMPORARY TATTOO RASH
When it’s likely to appear: Within 3 weeks of getting a henna tattoo.
Signs to watch for:
-Redness, swelling, intense itch
-Tiny bumps or blisters
-Loss of skin color or scarring

For serious reactions (trouble breathing, dizziness, or stomach aches), seek immediate medical care. For mild reactions, see a dermatologist if it lasts longer than a week.

SUN ALLERGY
When it’s likely to appear: Anytime after you get inked.
Signs of a sun allergy:
-Redness and swelling around the tattoo
-Itchy rash, blisters, or hives

Protect your tattoo from the sun by applying sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) 15 minutes before going outdoors or covering your tattoo with clothing.

SKIN DISEASE TRIGGER
When it’s likely to appear: Within 10-20 days, or even years after getting a tattoo.
Signs to watch for:
-Psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo, or keloids
-Skin cancer signs

If you notice any unusual changes or scars, book an appointment with a dermatologist. They can help minimize damage and treat skin diseases.

MRI BURN
When it’s likely to appear: Rare, but possible during an MRI.
Signs of a reaction: Pain, redness, or swelling on the tattooed skin.

Always inform the MRI technician if you have tattoos or permanent makeup. If you feel any burning or stinging, ask them to stop the scan.

SWOLLEN LYMPH NODES
When it’s likely to appear: As your skin heals from the tattoo.
Signs of a reaction: Swelling in the lymph nodes near the tattoo (typically in the neck, armpits, or groin). If you notice persistent swelling, see your primary care doctor to rule out other causes.

At North Idaho Dermatology, we’re here to help you protect and care for your skin. If you’re experiencing any reactions or have concerns about your tattoo, don’t hesitate to schedule with one or our dermatologists at North Idaho Dermatology (208) 665-7546.

Because May is Skin Cancer Awarenss Month and with summer kicking off in, it’s the perfect reminder to protect your skin! The right sunscreen doesn’t just prevent sunburn, it can also reduce your risk of skin cancer and help prevent early signs of aging. But not all sunscreens are created equal!

Here’s what to look for on the label:

✅ Broad Spectrum – Protects against both UVA and UVB rays
✅ SPF 30 or Higher – As recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology
✅ Water Resistant – Great for outdoor activities, lasting 40 or 80 minutes on wet or sweaty skin

At North Idaho Dermatology, we carry dermatologist-recommended sunscreen products right in our office — carefully selected to protect your skin and fit your lifestyle. Mineral sunscreen is recommended as best and chemical sunscreen is not.

A Board Certified Dermatologist is a skin, hair, and nail expert trained to diagnose and treat over 3,000 conditions—from everyday acne to life-threatening skin cancer.

But their care goes far beyond the surface.

-Uncover a hidden liver condition just by looking at the skin.
-Treat hair loss in a young woman so she can regain her confidence.

Your skin tells a story. Sometimes it's about more than just the skin. Conditions like diabetes or heart disease can show signs on the surface, and your dermatologist may be the first to catch them.
