Before adding a new skin care product to your routine, it’s important to test it—your skin will thank you! At North Idaho Dermatology, we recommend trying these simple steps to avoid irritation.

With so many options—cleansers, moisturizers, and cosmetics—it can be tricky to know what’s right for your skin. Even if a product is labeled for your skin type, some ingredients, like preservatives, can cause allergic contact dermatitis, making your skin red, itchy, or swollen.

How to Test Your Skin Care Products:
-Apply a small, quarter-sized amount of the product to a test spot (like the underside of your arm or inside your elbow) twice daily for 7–10 days.

-Leave it on as you normally would—if it’s a cleanser, follow the recommended time on the label.

-If no reaction occurs after 7–10 days, it’s likely safe to use.

If you notice redness, itching, or swelling:
-Wash the area gently.
-Apply a cool compress or petroleum jelly.
-Avoid using the product again.

Some ingredients like retinol or glycolic acid may cause temporary irritation—this can be normal for sensitive skin.

If your skin reacts severely, or if you’re unsure which ingredient is causing a problem, call North Idaho Dermatology at (208) 665-7546. Our board-certified dermatologists can perform patch testing to pinpoint the cause and help you choose safe, effective products.

Tip: Always check for “fragrance-free” products if you have sensitive skin—unscented or botanical products may still contain irritating ingredients.

Your skin deserves care and protection, test smart, stay safe, and if you need help, we’re here! Call us at | (208) 665-7546 to schedule an appointment.

Is That Old Sunscreen Still Safe?
As you unpack your summer essentials—pool gear, beach towels, and sunscreen—it’s not uncommon to come across a bottle left over from last year. While finding it might seem convenient, it’s important to pause and consider its effectiveness. Sunscreen can expire, and using an outdated product may offer significantly less protection than you think.

At North Idaho Dermatology, we’re here to keep your family’s skin healthy all summer long. Here’s what you need to know:

Why Sunscreen Matters:
Sunscreen isn’t just about avoiding sunburn. Using it regularly from a young age helps reduce the risk of skin cancer—including melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Just one serious sunburn in childhood can double the risk of melanoma later in life! That’s why modeling good sun safety habits now makes a big difference for their future.

Does Sunscreen Expire?
Yes! If there’s no expiration date, most sunscreens are good for 3 years from purchase. If you're not sure how old it is, watch for signs like:
-A weird chemical smell
-Dry, clumpy texture
-Clear liquid separating from the lotion

Why You Shouldn’t Use Expired Sunscreen:
Old sunscreen may look okay—but its protective ingredients break down over time, especially if it’s been exposed to heat. This means less UV protection, patchy coverage, and even possible skin irritation. Not worth the risk.

Sun-Smart Tips for Summer:
Replace old sunscreen—especially if it's over 3 years old or has been stored in a hot place. Teach your kids to apply it themselves (hello, lifelong habit!). Use SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming.

North Idaho Dermatology offers an array of sunscreen options! Need sunscreen recommendations or want to check in on your family’s skin health? Come see us or give us a call at (208)665-7546.

With the summer sun heating up North Idaho, it’s the perfect time to talk about prickly heat, also known as heat rash. This common skin irritation happens when sweat glands get blocked, trapping sweat beneath the skin. The result? A rash of tiny, itchy bumps that can feel prickly or stinging when the sweat finally breaks through.

The best way to avoid prickly heat is by minimizing excessive sweating. Dermatologists recommend wearing lightweight, loose-fitting cotton clothing to allow your skin to breathe. If you're exercising, try to do it early in the morning or later in the evening when it's cooler, or take your workout indoors where there's air-conditioning. Keeping your skin cool with fans, cold showers, or time spent in an air-conditioned space can also make a big difference.

If you’re struggling with heat rash or have questions about how to care for your skin during the warmer months, North Idaho Dermatology is here to help you stay comfortable and confident all summer long.

Turns out, things like your blood type (Type O is a fave), how much CO₂ you emit, body heat, exercise, and even the color of your clothes can make you a mosquito magnet!

Bite Prevention Tips:
✅ Avoid dawn/dusk
✅ Wear long, light-colored clothing
✅ Use DEET-based repellent
✅ Use fans—they hate wind
❌ Skip citronella candles (they don’t really work)

If You Get Bitten:
Use ice or hydrocortisone
Try antihistamines
Don’t scratch—it makes it worse!

Stay itch-free this summer! Questions? Call North Idaho Dermatology at (208) 665-7546.
