Autumn is a favorite season for many of us.
The weather is getting a little cooler, we start spending more time indoors, and preparations for the holidays are in full swing!
For others, however, fall is not so festive --- many people tend to get sick during this time, allergies can flare up, and the hours of decreasing sunlight sometimes leads to seasonal depression.

Using acupuncture as a preventative approach to colds and flu can reduce the incidence of upper respiratory tract infection and shorten the duration of the illness.
If illness does occur, acupuncture can help stave off a prolonged sickness without the excessive use of medication and over-the-counter drugs, allowing you to get back on your feet more quickly.

TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY:
☛ Consume approximately 3 liters of filtered water daily.
☛ Exercise regularly. Physical activity increases the movement of blood and lymph throughout the body, allowing immune cells to circulate and identify bacteria and viruses, helping to keep you from getting sick.
☛ Limit sugar intake. Sugar taxes the immune system, especially when you’re feeling under the weather.
☛ Get plenty of rest.
☛ Increase your regular acupuncture treatments to help boost immunity and fight off colds.

Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues.
More than 100 autoimmune conditions exist.
While each syndrome manifests differently, many share common features such as chronic inflammation, pain, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and immune dysfunction.

Standard medications often include immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or biologic drugs --- therapies that can be life-changing but also bring side effects.

Treatments can vary but more and more people are looking for alternatives, without harsh side effects, to address the whole person --- not just the symptoms.
This is where acupuncture steps in, not as a replacement, but as a complementary tool to support balance, reduce symptoms, and enhance quality of life.
It does not interfere with standard medical treatments. In fact, it often enhances their effects or helps reduce reliance on certain medications (e.g., NSAIDs or corticosteroids).

Here are several key ways acupuncture benefits those with autoimmune diseases:
• Regulation of Immune Response/Pain Reduction
Several studies show that acupuncture can help modulate an overactive or dysregulated immune system, particularly valuable for managing chronic inflammation and immune-related flares. By stimulating the body’s release of endorphins and enkephalins, acupuncture provides natural analgesia.

• Digestive and Hormonal Regulation
Acupuncture improves gut motility, reduces nausea, and balances hormonal rhythms, including thyroid and adrenal function. Research shows it can reduce cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone.

• Stress and Emotional Balance
Stress is not only a trigger for autoimmune flares but also worsens disease progression. Acupuncture is renowned for its calming effects by promoting parasympathetic nervous system activity.
Acupuncture supports mental health, helping to treat anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances, which commonly affect autoimmune patients.

Treating autoimmune disorders is one of my specialties and it's stunning how many people come to me for relief. In a coordination of care with their PCP, many of my patients have been able to lessen or even discontinue their medications.
Once the condition stabilizes and symptoms become controllable, most patients continue here with monthly maintenance treatments, or come in during times of high stress, and for seasonal tune-ups. I also always suggest adjunct therapies such as dietary guidance and lifestyle recommendations.

Treating a mental illness may require medications and the recommendation of different therapies, such as psychotherapy or other supports.

Auricular (ear) acupuncture is a very powerful technique and I've been using it for decades. Whether l'm addressing a physical issue or mental/emotional issue, I incorporate it into 99% of my point-prescriptions to augment the effects of the treatment.
Using just 2 needles will calm and ground the patient. It relaxes the fight-or-flight response, lowers the heart rate and relieves anxiety, frustration, panic, and anger.

A large portion of my social media platform-content is dedicated to mental health issues, and World Mental Health Day is a perfect time to highlight hope for recovery.
With the right treatment, people can and do recover from mental illness.

This is one of the biggest myths about acupuncture.

First of all, it’s entirely up to you how long you choose to continue to get treatments. Of course, like any other healthy habit, the longer you maintain it, the better your quality of life.

Perhaps the most apt analogy for continuing care with acupuncture is chiropractic adjustments for your spine.
Both disciplines consist of a thorough health evaluation followed by a treatment plan involving phases of care:
• The Initial Phase - This consists of the highest visit frequency. In cases of chronic imbalances it is common to require treatments weekly until your body’s energy is properly balanced and restored.
Your acupuncture visits may be combined with herbal prescriptions and/or supplements, lifestyle suggestions, and self-care recommendations.

As you start to improve, your visit frequency is diminished.
• The Rehabilitative Phase - Here, the chiropractor or acupuncturist would start spacing out your visits and begin to make fine adjustments and allow the body to settle into its new structural pattern. This is a critical phase of care in that it is setting the stage for lifelong wellness or maintenance.
As for acupuncture, this marks the transition to:
• The Maintenance Care Phase - Every patient is different --- some choose to come weekly, others may schedule treatments every 2 weeks, or monthly, especially during stressful times or seasonal changes.
The whole objective is to get your body back to its stable internal environment and sustain that balance.

If you kept your car in park with the engine revving at 65 miles per hour, what do you think would happen?
You guessed it --- after a short time your car would break down.
If you were lucky, a simple tune-up would fix the problem…if not, the engine might need to be replaced entirely.

Stress is a revving engine that, if left unchecked, can wear out the body AND mind.
It can lead to a variety of symptoms of ill health in our personal, professional, financial, and social lives.

Stress increases our body’s production of cortisol and adrenaline. These body chemicals help activate the “fight or flight” response, a normal reaction that is designed to prepare the body to flee danger or fight an attacker.
Unfortunately, many modern stressors are chronic and end up activating this response for weeks, months, or years at a time --- wearing you down and setting the stage for illness and disease.

The good news is that acupuncture (and Chinese medicine) can be extremely helpful in reducing signs and symptoms associated with stress in a number of ways:
• Safe, gentle, and effective acupuncture treatments can help “turn off” the fight or flight response and enable you to feel calmer and sleep more soundly.
• Lifestyle suggestions, including proper nutrition, meditation, rest and exercise, allow you to maintain health over the long-term.

Cool your engine before it burns out!

I've talked with several tattoo artists, and it’s astonishing how much pain/repetitive stress they experience in order to achieve the correct angle to apply the ink during a session --- they basically have to be contortionists!
Other professions such as ophthalmologists, dentists, dental hygienists, and even jewelers require challenging work-positions and all have similar physical complaints including:
• Upper and middle back pain/Neck pain
• Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
• Headaches
• Tendonitis [Carpal tunnel sensations]
• Trigger finger
• Stress

Many are turning to acupuncture to accelerate the healing process.
How it helps:
☛ Treats pain, whether the pain is localized or if it radiates to other areas
☛ Stops muscle spasms and releases muscle tightness (which are very common and happens when the muscles surrounding the area become overworked and overextended)
☛ Enhances blood flow to the area and reduces inflammation

Utilizing acupuncture for repetitive stress injuries is a great way to get healthy...and generally, it works faster than just rest, ice, and NSAIDS.
In addition to acupuncture treatments, I always recommend frequent stretch-breaks and chiropractic care to help patients improve.🌟

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is sometimes referred to as “winter depression”.

As we transition from summer to autumn, those who suffer from SAD start to experience higher levels of anxiety as they anticipate the coming months of less sunshine and increased symptomatology.
Symptoms of SAD include low mood, irritability, fatigue, and difficulty focusing. They vary from person to person, but can be severe enough to disrupt daily life.

While SAD can be a frustrating condition, there are treatments and coping techniques available:
☛ Light therapy: Different than tanning in a tanning bed, this involves daily exposure to a full-spectrum light that duplicates natural sunlight. When used regularly throughout the winter months, light therapy has been shown to reduce symptoms in 70 percent of SAD sufferers. Contact me for specific instructions.
☛ Exercise: As a natural antidepressant, exercise can help to alleviate some of the symptoms of SAD. Try swimming, biking, lifting weights, yoga, or just walking outside.
☛ Supplements: There are a number of health products that are beneficial; contact me for more information.
☛ Acupuncture: Acupuncture can relieve many of the symptoms; it works to rebalance the body’s Qi, reduce stress, and elevate one's mood.
I recommend that patients begin weekly sessions one month prior to when they typically experience their symptoms.

The proper treatments and recommendations will help you ease more smoothly into the next season!🍂

Those of us in the wellness community understand the meaning of “doing the work”.
So what is “THE WORK"?

Let’s start with self-awareness…
Self-awareness is when you recognize the way you feel, act, and think.
For instance: acknowledging how your actions impact those around you and reflecting on those actions allow you to consider how your behavior might have affected others. You can think of that neighbor who chats you up, completely oblivious, as he watches you balance and juggle the heavy grocery bags from your car.
That said, it's key to understand the reasons behind YOUR own actions, and the triggers for certain behavioral patterns.
When you "do the work", you engage yourself in self-reflection and identify areas where you need to grow. By exploring underlying patterns that negatively impact you, you're able to take proactive steps and actively address these issues through self-care.
In order to take care of yourself, it’s important to become self-aware first --- and this enables you to improve yourself, your emotional well-being, and your relationships.

Self-awareness is a lifelong journey; introspection and reflection are challenging. It’s important to seek out resources and experiences that push you to grow.

Ways to improve your self-awareness skills:
• Acupuncture - In addition to addressing the root causes, these treatments ground you and help you think more clearly, enabling you to make better decisions.
• Talk Therapy - Part of this process involves being given guidance and tools where you’ll then use what you learn to break the destructive habits and retrain your brain to think in a different way.
• Mindfulness Practices - These help you tune-in to improve your self-awareness skills by showing you how the body and mind interact to shape your actions.

As Self-Awareness Month comes to a close, we can all continue to practice self-reflection and self-care year-round!

Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) vary from person to person, but IBS is commonly characterized by intestinal pain and either diarrhea or constipation.
The symptoms also vary from moderate to severe, but either way, the discomfort needs to be managed long term.
The cause of IBS is not completely known, but one hypothesis suggests it has to do with a disruption of neurotransmission between the intestines and the central nervous system.
Most people try adjusting their diet to manage the symptoms, but many turn to medication for support.
However, systematic reviews of IBS medication have shown inconsistent success, and no one drug has been found to treat all the symptoms of IBS.

In light of ineffective and expensive medications, many people have started looking to acupuncture to focus on the causes and symptoms of IBS.

Digestive disturbances are often related to:
• Inflammation of some kind - This is one of the conditions acupuncture has been proven to address very well.
• Metabolism - There are acupuncture points which specifically increase gastrointestinal muscle contraction and relaxation, reduce gastric acid secretion, regulate large intestine activity, all of which can balance digestive function and support patients with IBS.
• Chronic stress in a person's life - Many acupuncture points reduce stress in the body.
• Diet and nutrient deficiencies in the body - Treatments are often a combination of acupuncture, nutritional recommendations, and exercise or movement.

By applying a holistic philosophy that addresses both symptom relief as well as the underlying causes of IBS, we can develop a well-rounded, personalized treatment plan that incorporates diet and lifestyle considerations.☺️
