One’s ability to stay focused and on task can be challenging in the world we live in. We are constantly bombarded with sights, sounds, smells, interruptions and more. It can be really frustrating.
A recent study by Microsoft found the average human has an attention span of only eight seconds! This speaks volumes about the state of the world.

Part of the problem is our bodies were designed to move and we have become too sedentary. Our nervous system doesn't know how to respond to this; it also affects our muscles, tendons, and circulatory systems. The more time we spend on our phones, tablets, etc., the more stagnant everything becomes. Our muscles shorten, tighten and atrophy, our circulation becomes sluggish and our brains foggy. For everything to function properly, you have to get up and move.

Acupuncture is another way to increase focus and concentration. It's capacity to promote neuroplasticity (enhancing neural repair and growth) has made it a focal point in neurological research, contributing to its rising scientific interest.
As studies continue to explore the brain’s capacity for repair, acupuncture’s role in promoting neuroplasticity is gaining recognition as a valuable complementary therapy.
There are specific acupuncture points that have been noted to improve mental clarity and awareness, while also enhancing memory.

So while you’re on spring break, maybe consider a digital detox --- get moving and enjoy the beautiful weather!🌞

Your circadian rhythm (CR) governs the body’s natural cycles and helps to regulate appetite, sleep, and mood. This cycle is influenced and controlled by light from the sun. There is an entire field of study called Chronomedicine that focuses on
illnesses and disorders that occur when the body’s biological clock is disturbed, such as from jetlag.
Biochemical changes are known to occur when behavioral patterns are altered due to the division of night and day. The more inconsistent a sleep schedule, the more your life can be affected by the time change.
☛ Maintaining a regular bedtime/wake-up time allows your body to function the way it’s meant to.
☛ Acupuncture tune-ups can reset the body's cycle.

If changing the clocks this weekend knocks you off balance, contact me for more lifestyle suggestions.🌞

Sensory overload occurs when your brain struggles to process and respond to the sensory information it’s receiving.
It’s a condition that affects people of all ages and can make everyday environments feel unbearable. Chronic stress, anxiety, depression, or burnout can make it harder for the brain to process sensory input efficiently, increasing sensitivity.

Features of sensory sensitivity include:
⚡️Easily overwhelmed by strong sensory input, such as bright flickering lights
⚡️Confusion in crowds from the sound of people talking loudly or simultaneously
⚡️Annoyance due to the continuous hum on an airplane

The right tools and techniques can help you lead a more balanced and fulfilling life.
☛ Engage in activities that calm the nervous system, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or acupuncture.
☛ Utilize sensory tools like noise-filtering earplugs. They take the edge off the noise, allowing you to stay fully engaged without feeling anxious; you’re able to hear everything, just at a lower volume.

LOOP brand earplugs are my go-to sensory aid...did you happen to notice the model wearing them?☺️

Tension headaches are reported to be the most common type of headache experienced.
Those who suffer from them frequently report a feeling of their "head being squeezed", with pressure around the forehead, temples, and back of the head or neck. They may only last 30 minutes, or they could linger and are considered chronic if a person experiences them 15 or more days per month for several months.
Typically they are attributed to muscle tension or spasms of the head, face, scalp, or jaw and stress tends to be the biggest factor regarding these types of headaches.
Treatment for tension headaches is over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or aspirin; severe cases are sometimes treated with prescription drugs, but they tend to fail because they do not address the underlying factor contributing to the headache.

Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the root cause by identifying the personal stimuli that create tension-type headaches.
Acupuncture itself provides headache relief with a great deal of success. It acts through multiple pathways to produce analgesic effects and reduces central sensitization. It prompts a sequence of events that include the release of chemicals, including neurotransmitters and the body’s own opioids, within the central nervous system, which yields the analgesic effect.
Acupuncture is also very effective at providing relief from stress and anxiety --- two triggers of tension-type headaches.

Headaches are disabling and can significantly influence your quality of life. Repeated headaches affect family and personal life.

February vacation is next week…it’s time to cross off "plan a holiday to an exotic destination" from your 2026 Dream Wishlist!

Jet lag symptoms may last from 1-10 days and often include:
• Sleep Issues
• Fatigue/Headaches
• Edema
• Nausea/Digestive Problems

Here are a few preventive guidelines to ensure smooth skies:
✈︎ Drink plenty of water, as the recycled air on the plane tends to be dry, and it’s easy to become dehydrated; reducing coffee, tea, alcohol, and juice while in flight is helpful.
✈︎ Acupuncture treatment prior to flying can help address some of these symptoms in advance such as sleep issues, fatigue, and headaches.
✈︎ Acupuncture treatment after you travel helps rebalance your circadian rhythm and would be an ideal remedy for recovering from jet lag.

Acupuncture also boosts your immune system so it's an excellent treatment both before and after a trip!🛩

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high blood sugar levels due to the body’s inability to produce or effectively use insulin.
Despite adhering to a medication regimen and making positive lifestyle changes, those dealing with diabetes might still struggle with controlling blood sugar levels.
The complications of diabetes are numerous and include neuropathy, which causes pain, tingling, and numbness in the extremities.

Recent studies suggest that acupuncture has shown promise in alleviating these symptoms:
☛ A study published in the Journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice found that acupuncture can help improve insulin sensitivity, thus aiding in better blood sugar control.
☛ A study in the Journal of Acupuncture and Meridian Studies found that acupuncture can reduce the levels of inflammatory markers in the body potentially reducing inflammation and pain associated with diabetes.

Excessive stress has been proven to wreak havoc in the body and can cause a cascade of stress hormones, which signals the liver to dump more glucose into the bloodstream. This can be very dangerous for a diabetic who doesn't recognize the symptoms. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety by influencing the autonomic nervous system, which can have a positive impact on blood sugar control; many of my patients see fewer ‘Highs’ and ‘Lows’ with their glucose monitor.

For those looking for additional help and solutions, contact me for more information about how acupuncture is a cost-effective adjunct to current medical treatments and a great way to manage your diabetes and support the body's metabolism.
It can significantly alleviate symptoms, improve blood sugar control, and enhance overall quality of life.🌟

Was part of your 2026 Wellness Wishlist to "...implement a regular meditation practice into my daily routine..."?

If you’re wondering where to begin, here’s a simple guide to some of the best meditation techniques and how they can help you find calmness in a busy world.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION
This type involves paying full attention to the present moment, including noticing your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment. Best for addressing stress reduction, mental clarity, emotional regulation.
In a typical session, you might focus on your breath, the sounds around you, or the sensation of your body sitting in the chair. When your mind drifts (and it will), you gently bring it back.
Studies show mindfulness meditation can reduce anxiety, improve focus, and even change brain structure over time, strengthening areas related to memory.
Try it:
• Find a quiet place.
• Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
• Focus on your breath. Notice the inhale and exhale.
When your mind wanders, gently return to your breath.
Even five minutes a day can begin to shift your relationship with stress.

BODY SCAN MEDITATION
During this session, you’ll 'mentally scan' your body from head to toe, paying attention to any sensations --- tingling, warmth, tension --- without trying to change them. It's often used in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs to help people cope with chronic pain, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Best for reconnecting with the body, relieving tension, improving sleep.
Try it:
• Lie down comfortably.
• Close your eyes and begin focusing on your toes.
• Move your attention slowly upward, noticing sensations in each part of the body.
• If you encounter tension, breathe into it, then move on.
The body scan teaches you to listen to your body with kindness and patience, rather than criticism or urgency.

LOVING-KINDNESS MEDITATION (METTA)
Here, you’ll first send goodwill to yourself, then to others. It starts with phrases like, “May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I live with ease,” and gradually expands to include loved ones, strangers, and even difficult people. Best for cultivating compassion and healing emotional wounds.
Research has found that regular practice of loving-kindness meditation increases positive emotions and social connection.
Try it:
• Sit quietly and close your eyes.
• Silently repeat kind phrases toward yourself.
• Gradually extend those phrases outward to others, visualizing them surrounded by warmth and love.
This practice can be especially healing if you're struggling with self-criticism or resentment.

MANTRA MEDITATION
In mantra meditation, you silently or audibly repeat a word, phrase, or sound --- traditionally called a mantra. The repetition anchors your attention and calms the mind's chatter. Mantras can be traditional Sanskrit sounds like “Om", or personal affirmations like “I am at peace". Best for cultivating focus, spiritual connection, calming the mind.
Try it:
• Choose a mantra that resonates with you.
• Sit comfortably and either say it out loud or silently repeat it.
• Focus your entire attention on the mantra.
• When thoughts arise, gently return to the mantra.
Over time, the mantra becomes like a soft thread weaving through your day, pulling you gently back to center.

VISUALIZATION MEDITATION
This is best for motivation, relaxation, and achieving goals. Visualization meditation uses mental imagery to create a scene that evokes relaxation or success. Athletes often use this technique to rehearse winning races or perfecting performances. You can use it to imagine yourself achieving goals or simply resting in a peaceful place.
Try it:
• Close your eyes and imagine a place where you feel safe and peaceful.
• Engage all your senses: What do you see, hear, smell, feel?
• Stay in the visualization for several minutes, returning whenever your mind wanders.
Visualization reminds us that our minds can be allies in our journey toward peace and achievement.

Whether you're longing for peace, craving connection, or seeking clarity the best meditation technique is the one that meets you where you are.

To help patients relax, I typically take them through a mini-combo meditation at the beginning of each acupuncture session.

Which path to serenity will you try first?✨💫✨

Throughout our lives, a variety of factors affect our health and well-being. Extreme stress, lack of sleep, and a poor diet can all play into how strong the body is and how well it performs. Although most of the time we can recover quickly and regain our health, when these factors are numerous, our internal mechanisms become compromised and weakened.

The immune system is like the guard of the body's cells, tissues, and organs --- it’s what keeps us healthy and helps us ward off pathogens like the flu or a cold; when strong, it will repel the worst of viral and bacterial invaders so infection can be avoided at all costs.
Though it may make us feel lousy, getting a cold is not always a bad thing. Instead, it's a sign that the body's resources are strong and vital, working to return us to a state of good health.
However, if our immune system is already compromised, a cold could further weaken the body, leaving it open to a more serious illness...and that’s when we reach for the over-the-counter medications to help relieve our symptoms.

Acupuncture is a safe and natural way we can be proactive about supporting our immune systems.
It can regulate immune function, while also treating the underlying causes of the disease. This is done by reducing the symptoms, speeding up the healing, decreasing excess phlegm, decreasing inflammation, and boosting the immune-mediated cells in the body that help ward off invasions.
Studies show that receiving regular acupuncture treatments can actually prevent the body from getting sick.
Acupuncture needles stimulate the brain into thinking an ‘invader’ (harmful virus or bacteria) has entered the body. The brain signals the increased release of T cells and white blood cells the body produces (which destroy these ‘invaders’ in the body) to fight off the intruder.
The amazing part is the increased cellular response lasts for several days after the acupuncture treatment.

If illness does occur, acupuncture can bolster resilience helping you get back on your feet faster!☺️

During the colder months, dry, winter air can disrupt the uppermost layer of skin --- contributing to itching and irritation. Many people can also experience flare-ups of certain common conditions including eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.

I always remind my patients that dry, cracked skin is not amenable to acupuncture, and I’ll emphasize the importance of keeping skin protected with creams and lotions.

Here are some essential winter tips you might be missing:
☛ Hydrate your outside environment too! Heating systems dry the air. Use a cool-water humidifier, especially where you sleep.
☛ Wear a hat that covers your head and ears to protect your scalp from dryness and cold.
☛ Don’t forget sun protection for your eyes! Sunlight reflecting off snow and ice can damage the skin around the eyes, cornea, and lens and increases the risk of developing eye problems. Safeguard your vision by consistently wearing sunglasses.

Keep things simple!
Daily winter skin protection doesn't have to involve dozens of steps.❄️🌞

Many people struggle through the winter months trying to cope with the various symptoms associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
In addition to regular acupuncture treatments, I will often suggest Bright Light Therapy.
I've reviewed several lamps and prefer the CAREX Day-Light Sky Light Therapy Lamp.
When used properly one can begin to feel the benefits in just a few days.

In some cases, such as with certain eye conditions, it's better to first consult your healthcare professional before starting a program.

Contact me for specific instructions to optimize your light therapy experience.🌟

It’s almost that time of year, when everyone makes those promises to themselves --- they start dieting and exercising, join a gym...then by the end of January, most have given up.
Instead of making New Year’s resolutions, create a list of things to look forward to in the new year.
Research has shown that anticipating something can be a powerful, positive emotion that helps us enjoy very exciting and fulfilling lives.

Planning is key. Keep a chart or calendar and check off each event as you complete it. This enables you to be excited about the next!
• Line up new local restaurants to try.
• Arrange to reconnect with an old friend or relative.
• Start going through that must-read booklist.
• Plan a holiday to an exotic destination or local day trips.

Additionally, remember that acupuncture helps with post-holiday burnout!🎆
