On National Fentanyl Awareness Day, we’re sharing an important message for families:

Many teens don’t realize that fentanyl is being used to make counterfeit prescription pills. These pills can look real, but even one can be deadly. Fake pills are often made to look like oxycodone, Xanax, or Adderall, but may contain fentanyl.

It’s important to talk with your teens about the risks of these substances and to start those conversations early. For guidance on how to begin, check out the resources from Song for Charlie: www.songforcharlie.org.

Don’t forget that carrying Narcan can save a life. You can access Narcan for free through Cohasset’s prevention kits, available at Town Hall, the Library, the Police Station, and Willcutt Commons.

Clean out your medicine cabinet this weekend! 💊

This Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day- a safe, easy way to dispose of unused or expired medications. Unused prescriptions at home are a leading source of misuse, especially for youth. Take a moment this weekend to go through your medicine cabinet and safely dispose of any medications that you no longer need by dropping them off at the kiosk at the Cohasset Police Department.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage meaningful conversations about substance use.

In Cohasset, data shows that 1 in 4 high school students report having tried alcohol, with that number rising to 57.7% among seniors.

At the same time, there’s encouraging progress! Recent data shows a decline in current alcohol use among seniors, reflecting the impact of prevention efforts in our community.

One message stands out: parents matter.
Research shows that 80% of teens say their parents are the biggest influence on their decisions about alcohol—and parental disapproval is the #1 reason teens choose not to drink.

Clear, consistent expectations make a difference. Talk early, talk often, and let your teen know where you stand. 💬

This event is always such a meaningful opportunity to come together, enjoy a beautiful walk, and raise awareness for youth wellbeing, mental health, and substance use prevention in Cohasset.

A special thank you to Cohasset Rotary for their generous support of Safe Harbor Cohasset and for including us in such a memorable day!

We also want to recognize our Youth Ambassadors, who created the informational signs displayed along the route. These signs highlight real data and insights about the experiences of middle and high school students in Cohasset. If you didn’t get a chance to see them, they are now on display on the Town Common through the end of the month—be sure to check them out! Huge shoutout to three of our amazing ambassadors—Eren, Dominique, and Malone—who met with Senator Patrick O'Connor this week to discuss alcohol policy and youth health!

As part of an ongoing alcohol policy training program, these students have been learning about prevention efforts, how policies are developed, and how to engage thoughtfully in conversations with decision-makers.

They met with Senator O’Connor to share their perspectives on alcohol use among their peers and in their community, and to continue the conversation about how policy connects to community health.

We’re so proud of their leadership and grateful to Senator O’Connor for his continued support!

💬 In Cohasset, female students are nearly 3x more likely than male students to report feeling very stressed at school (23% vs. 8.3%)

🏠 And that stress doesn’t stop there—80% of females report stress outside of school, compared to 50% of males

These insights come directly from the 2025 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, given to students at CMHS last April—and they highlight why it’s so important to better understand and support the experiences of female teens in our community!
