Please join me in celebrating Moon’s life
Merlin’s Magic Moonbeam (“Moon”) crossed the rainbow bridge last night after he suddenly became unable to use his hind legs. The cause is uncertain - possibly a blood clot - but over the course of 24 hours of treatment it became clear that Moon was in substantial pain and his condition would not improve.
I am grateful for the six years we had together. His sense of humor, wisdom, kindness, and love touched many lives. Moon followed the beat of a different drummer. He taught people to listen to their hearts and to solve challenges by thinking outside the box. Playful and adventurous, he gave himself the title of Magical Master of Joyful Journeys. He inspired people with his quirky nature, independent thinking, and amazing horse hugs on and off the farm. He even went trick or treating and Christmas caroling in the community.
Moon dispensed incredible wisdom. Some of his most memorable insights are:
“I am Moon. I am me. That is enough. I can just be.”
“Dwell in the magic and let the rest simply flow through”
In response to a question on open mic/ask the herd night about how to save the world: “Be your authentic self. Listen to your heart. Share your gifts. The only power you have is to be your best you. If everyone does that - shines their light - the world will be a better place.”
Moon loved children, nature walks, animals, and his herd. He and Paddington were very close and would actually cuddle together, something I have never seen adult horses do. When Sweet Potato was ill, Moon became his personal sentinel, watching over him continuously. After Sweet Potato crossed the bridge, Moon took on the role of “Ministop” (like a baseball short stop), filling in all of the role gaps until the herd sorted out who was going to do what. Potato was clearly with Moon yesterday. The day we laid Potato down, the morning meadow was lit up silver with frost sparkles. Yesterday morning was the same.
Moon wanted to cross the rainbow bridge in the same spot in the meadow as Potato and even grabbed a few bites of grass in his last moments. He remains feisty and funny. Seconds after he died, I began to laugh because he was singing the song “Green Green Grass” by George Ezra. The refrain goes “green green grass, blue blue sky, you better throw a party on the day that I die.”
I couldn’t bring myself to throw a party last night but I am throwing this virtual Moon celebration today. Please share a special photo or memory of Moon in the comments below. And watch for him - he’s not truly gone, he’s just not in “fur form” anymore (as my dog Elena says). His spirit lives on and he will continue to watch over, love, uplift, and encourage all those who are connected to him.
