Lyme post #2: What to do if a tick bites you. (tips from Dr. Lori Clarke)

Ticks are very much out and about, and looking for warm bodies. (See previous post for tick bite prevention). If you find one attached, follow the following procedures safely address it.

1. Grab at the base of the tick and pull directly upwards with your fingers, tweezers, or tick removing tool.
2. DO NOT dig into your skin before or after fully removing ticks as this can inadvertently force bacteria deeper into your skin.
3, Assess how long the tick may have been attached, and whether it is feeding/engorged. Take a picture of any rash, and the tick if you can.
4. Provide that info to your doctor to help us advise on appropriate next steps.

In most cases, we’ll recommend a 5-15 telemedicine visit to properly assess, document and prescribe for you. Since timing is of the essence, we advise scheduling an urgent short visit to get you treated fastest.

Lyme post #1: Tick bite prevention

Just like us, ticks are also emerging from Vermont’s winter. Recent research suggests that 1 in 2 ticks in Vermont carries Lyme disease, making tick safety of upmost of importance. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe from ticks and tick borne illness:

1. Wear light color clothing outdoors—it make ticks more visible.
2. Limit potential tick contact sites by wearing long sleeves, tall socks, and a hat.
3. Conduct thorough tick checks on yourself, children and pets after outdoor activities.
4. Take a warm shower and wash clothing in hot soapy water to remove ticks that can be attached to clothes.

Stay tuned for our next post: How to remove ticks and assess Lyme potential!

Focus today is on MEN's health! Guys--talk to your Mountain View doctor about screening for prostate and colore**al cancer. (or partners of men--encourage them to reach out to us.)

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in American men and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men. Tests like PSA screenings and digital re**al exams can increase your chance of survival. As PSA levels are known to rise before other symptoms of prostate cancer appear, it is important to seek out a regular exam starting in the mid-twenties.

Colore**al cancer is the third most common cancer type (outside of skin cancers) in the United States, but thanks to awareness around colonoscopy screenings, the death rate from this cancer has dropped in recent years. Colore**al cancer is often beatable when detected and treated in its early stages and can even be prevented altogether when polyps are removed before they develop into cancer. Schedule a preventive physical with us and we'll discuss whether colonoscopy or the new home-kits are most appropriate for you.

Should I use antibiotics in addition to my natural medicine for a sinus infection? Naturopathic medicine is fantastic for many sinus infections. However, if you were getting better, but then get worse, if your sinuses are tender to touch, you have headaches or are over 10 days with symptoms, antibiotics can help clear a deeper or stronger infection. If you're in doubt, our doctors can help you sort that out. We keep urgent visit slots available for just that kind of decision. Contact us at https://www.mountainviewnaturalmedicine.com/contact
