Great Feb 29 NY Times article on why heat pumps are great for cheap and efficient fossil fuel emission free home heating and cooling now in the Northeast USA

Here’s the single biggest change you can make to reduce your home’s energy use.

The United States is the largest producer of oil and gas in the world. The United States is the largest historical emitter of greenhouse gases The United States has one of the largest per-capita emissions in the world, standing at about 17 tons of CO2e per year, compared to the global average of about 6 tons of CO2e per year. Yet we often hear the statement that unless China and India reduce emissions, our efforts are useless.
Dear U.S. fossil fuel industry, you have the dubious honor of being the largest producer of oil and gas in the world, the United States is the largest historical emitter in the world, and one of the largest per-capita emitters in the world. Our sins are causing untold harm in countries that have done nothing to deserve it and are least equipped to deal with it. Why don’t we first get ourselves to the global average of 6 tons per person before we pass judgment on other countries?

Decarbonization.

Decarbonization is not progressing sufficiently rapidly. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions are unabated and continuing to grow globally while mankind continues on its su***de march. CO2 in the atmosphere continues to increase, recently storming past 420 parts per million (the safe limit is 350 ppm). Sales of fossil fuels still haven’t reached their peak. Most painfully, we all see well-meaning environmentally-minded neighbors and communities continuing to invest in gas guzzlers and oil or gas furnaces. We also see School Districts continuing to invest in fossil fuel buses. Even as we are battered by forest fires, air quality crises, floods and hurricanes, we realize that net zero by 2040 is a pipe dream and decarbonization is not yet top of mind.
Decarbonization is very specific and easily measurable. It means reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are typically measured in metric tons of CO2-equivalent or CO2e. Globally, we emit just shy of 60 billion metric tons of GHG annually, and we need to get that to net zero by 2040. Climate change is undoubtedly the existential crisis of our lifetime and should therefore enjoy the highest priority when considering inevitable tradeoffs. In other words, the top priority of any environmental body should be decarbonization. As long as we are in crisis mode, environmentalism equals decarbonization!

Good people, we need to wake up! Climate impacts will worsen into the future -- not just extreme weather, but also sea-level rise, species loss, crop loss, massive migrations, and utter chaos in our oceans. We need to snap out of our hypnotic state and take immediate action. We must call out the denialists, solution denialists and gradualists in our midst! And we must dump fossil fuels now and decarbonize rapidly. Net zero by 2070 is not good enough... 2050 is not good enough... and rapidly it is becoming clear that 2040 is not good enough either.
Hope is not a passive emotion. Remember, all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.

We are excited to have posted a new blog today.
Excerpts:
The Four Outcomes of Climate Change
By: Chandu Visweswariah This short blog should be mandatory reading for all G7 Summit delegates in Japan. With the flurry of recent policy and scientific information, where do we stand on climate change and global warming? What are the most likely outcomes? The chart below outlines the outcomes of global warming with impacts in this century and beyond. The left...

The following text handout was well received at the Philipstown celebration of Earthday at what was formerly the Garrison. It explains what you should do now to reduce you use of fossil fuels and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. It references the table below of financial incentives that make it possible to do many of these items at half the cost of just a few months ago.
Climate Change Is Accelerating – What Can You do?

The latest IPCC analysis report, and a recent PBS “Nature” documentary on widespread permafrost melting and alarming deep Methane release, made clear that the consequences of climate change are occurring much faster than expected and that we’re already witnessing some disastrous results.
Federal and State tax refunds and rebates, together with Utility incentives say that it’s time for each of us to plan to convert all our energy use to clean electricity, ASAP, because it’s now much cheaper.
1. Use only Energy Star products and LED lights.
2. Change your travel lifestyle. Drive and fly as little as possible. Rideshare, plan multipurpose trips, use public transport, cycle, walk. Slow down and enjoy the beauty of nature of which we are an integral part.
3. Make your home highly energy efficient thereby cutting energy use and costs. Be guided by getting an energy efficiency assessment to see where to concentrate your resources for maximum effect: https://www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Programs/Residential-Energy-Assessment-Programs
4. Check all the latest Federal and State tax refunds, rebates, and utility discounts for electric equipment (see separate table). Buying and installing both geothermal and low temperature air source heat pumps can now cost you half list price. https://www.cenhud.com/en/my-energy/save-energy-money/residential-incentives/
5. EVs are cheaper, increasing in range and speed of charging as battery technology rapidly improves. Very soon $25,000 EVs with 500 mile range will be commonplace. Today, get a $7500 Federal tax refund for US made cars and a $2000 NY State rebate and get help for your home charger.
6. To get started go to the Philipstown Fights Dirty website: https://www.philipstownfightsdirty.org/, or the Sustainable Putnam, Seven Steps to Clean Energy: https://sustainableputnam.org/7-steps/ or follow the 5 steps above. Do it now.

The following handout was extremely popular at Philipstown's Earthday celebration at what was formerly The Garrison. In one page you can see all the Federal, State and Central Hudson Financial Incentives that can, for example, half the cost of installing a heat pump system in your home.

NEW YORK'S $4.2B ENVIRONMENTAL BOND ACT

For the health of our children, our planet and our state economy, turn your ballot over in November and vote yes for the Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond. This will advance our Fossil Fuel Emission Reduction efforts by providing $500 million to reduce the purchase price of electric school buses and $400 million for solar panels and heat pumps for public schools and state-owned buildings -- a game-changer in our advocacy with school districts. Click here for more information about other crucial environmental projects the bond will fund.

CLEAN WATER, CLEAN AIR, GREEN JOBS ENVIRONMENTAL BOND ACT

Many people are helping to get the vote out for the November Mid-Term elections. However, many people don’t know that there is a $4.2Billion Bond Act to vote on too. You need to turn your ballot over to find it.

Here’s a summary of why it’s important:
1. Climate Change mitigation, including environmental infrastructure and conservation to lessen flood risks and improve water quality, green building projects to increase energy efficiency or build renewable energy on state-owned properties, and money for electric school buses and their charging.
2. Projects to rehabilitate coastlines, revitalize waterfronts and money for buyouts on flood-prone properties
3. Wastewater infrastructure repairs and upgrades, improvements in point and non-point pollution, and installations of green buffers.
4. Open space and farmland conservation/preservation, and fish hatchery creation and upgrades.
5. Creation of Green Jobs, with 35% of total funding to benefit disadvantaged communities.

Peter Callaway, Cold Spring

If approved by New York State voters, the Environmental Bond Act would be the first such act since 1996.
