This is the recommendation of Dr Becker, Dr McCarrell, and the American Optometric Association concerning the viewing of the April 8th solar eclipse.

“Use approved solar eclipse viewers. The only safe way to view a solar eclipse is through special-purpose solar filters, such as "eclipse glasses" or viewers that meet international standard ISO 12312-2 for safe viewing.” IF YOUR SOLAR ECLIPSE GLASSES DO NOT HAVE THAT CERTIFICATION, DO NOT USE. The solar eclipse glasses will clearly have that certification stamped on them. “Sunglasses, smoked glass, unfiltered telescopes or magnifiers, and polarizing filters are unsafe. Inspect your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer before use – if torn, scratched, or otherwise damaged, discard the device.” DO NOT USE. Even a small scratch in the lens can cause irreversible damage to your eyes.
