Fascia Friday!
What is fascia? Fascia is a form of connective tissue found throughout the entire body. This fascial system forms a three-dimensional matrix from head to toe. Think spider web or the membrane in an orange 🕸️
It provides shape and support, holds muscles together which allows for movement and for the muscles to contract and stretch.
When it’s healthy, fascia is slippery and smooth, and stretches with you as you move.
When fascia is stressed or not doing well it can get thicker, stickier, drier, and tighter.
This can cause a lot of pain and limit mobility and range of motion.
Dried out fascia - called fascial adhesions- can happen for a multiple reasons:
•Lifestyle - not enough physical activity
•Repetitive motions - using the same part of your body over and over
•Surgery or injury and more
You can prevent fascial problems by moving more, stretching regularly, having good body mechanics while working, and focusing on maintaining good posture while sitting and standing.
There’s even a whole modality called Myofascial Release Therapy that aims to target the fascial system specifically. This technique is great at melting the fascia and easing the tension to help it realign and eliminate imbalances.
