Our Book Club gatherings have been such a joy with thoughtful conversation, wonderful people, and the kind of connection that keeps us coming back for more!

This time, we’re diving into The In-Between by Hadley Vlahos, RN. It’s a collection of stories from a hospice nurse, offering a glimpse into the meaningful, tender, and sometimes unexpected moments that happen at the end of life. It’s the kind of book that invites reflection and stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

If you’re ready for another meaningful discussion (or want to join us for the first time), we’d love to have you there. Bring your thoughts, your curiosity, and maybe a friend who enjoys a good read.

Participants are encouraged to grab their own copy of the book in whatever way works best for them. And don’t worry if you don’t finish it—everyone is welcome to join the conversation, whether you’ve read every page, just a few, or simply want to listen and connect.

Theme: Echoes and Light – Honoring the past, shining hope on tomorrow ✨

Camp Erin is a grief support camp for children ages 6–17 who have experienced the death of someone close to them. Over the weekend, kids can enjoy fun camp activities while also taking part in grief support programs, all led by trained professionals and volunteers.

It’s a safe, supportive place to connect, express themselves, and learn to heal, while making new friends and memories. 💛

Friends of Hospice is excited to announce that our Community Grant Application is now open! We are looking to support local nonprofit agencies with programs that bring comfort, compassion, and care to individuals and families facing serious illness, palliative care, end-of-life, and bereavement.

If your nonprofit organization has a project that helps strengthen care and support in those areas in our community, we encourage you to apply!

Our first book club meetup was such a joy! Great conversation, great people, and the kind of energy that made us immediately want to do it again. So… we are!

This time, we’re diving into When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. It’s a beautifully written memoir by a neurosurgeon who suddenly finds himself on the other side of the medical world. The book explores purpose, identity, and what it means to live fully. This is the kind of story that stays with you long after you close the last page.

All are welcome to join us, whether your loss is hospice‑related or not, and whether it occurred recently or years ago. The purpose of the group is to gather with others in a confidential, small, and supportive setting. With care, compassion, and helpful resources, we gently explore the journey through grief together. We do ask that attendees commit to the full six weeks to help foster connection and healing within the group.

Community grief support is a vital part of the Friends of Hospice mission, offering comfort and connection to anyone grieving a loss. Whether or not the loss was connected to hospice care, all are welcome to find solace and understanding within our support groups.

Whether you’ve read the book before or are diving in for the first time, you’re welcome in this conversation. It’s a chance to connect, reflect, and share in a supportive community.

We were honored to have nearly 90 people gather with us and over 160 names read during an evening of reflection, remembrance, and community at the 2025 Trees of Light and Remembrance Ceremony. Your presence made the night truly meaningful.

A heartfelt thank you to Bishop Place for hosting us and providing a wonderful meal, to Neill's Flowers and Gifts for the beautiful centerpiece, and to the Threshold Choir of the Palouse for their musical talents that added such peace to the ceremony.

If you weren’t able to attend, there is still time to visit the Trees of Light. The trees will be on display at Bishop Place Independent Living in Pullman and the Whitman County Library in Colfax through December 31st. Blank ornaments are available at both locations if you’d like to add the name of someone you’re remembering this season.

May the lights continue to bring comfort, connection, and hope. ✨

This Veterans Day, we give special thanks to all who have served our country with courage and compassion. Your dedication and sacrifice inspire us every day.

We’d also like to send a big shout-out to the 5th graders at Jennings Elementary School for sharing their hearts with hospice patients across the region. Their beautifully colored poems and thoughtful notes of inspiration brought smiles and gratitude to so many.

Join us for a FREE community showing of Disney•Pixar’s Coco as we come together to remember, honor, and celebrate the lives of those we’ve loved and lost. Families and community members are invited to bring a photo of someone special to place on our community Ofrenda (remembrance table).

If you can’t attend in person or don’t have access to a printer, you can still be part of this remembrance! Simply comment below with a photo of your loved one, and Friends of Hospice will print it and place it on the Ofrenda for you. 💛
