Some people are scared and confused right now. That’s because at some level they convinced themselves that getting out of this situation was simply a matter of appealing to the morality of those who benefit from their oppression. They failed to understand that those arguments have already been made and will never work on those happy to benefit while you do not.

There are all kinds of ways of exploring the impact of enslavement and how it affects mental health today. It doesn’t always have to be in a therapy room on a couch. Here’s one creative way we can do that.

I just picked up a new read that outlines the damage that the mental health field has done to Black people. Although I am a psychologist, I think it is important to be honest about the history of mental health in this country. Very little attention is paid to the racist diagnosis, treatments, and providers that have damaged our trust. People constantly want to have a conversation about stigma and pathologize African-Americans for their distrust of the mental healthcare system. They never want to have a conversation about the racist practices that have caused us to have a healthy mistrust of a system that has been so damaging. I am looking forward to diving into this book

I felt pretty emotional reading this. It’s a mixture of joy and grief, as I consider the reasons why this needs to be done. Hopefully many people will continue to take advantage of such an important initiative.

Benin is the latest country in Africa to enable people of African descent worldwide to seek citizenship. This step aligns with an ongoing advocacy from members of the African diaspora.
