Ashley is an international alumna from the class of 2025! She is working in AdventHealth Orlando on the Medical PCU🏥🫀

1) What made you choose WWU’s School of Nursing and what did you enjoy the most?
I chose WWU because of the strong sense of community and the opportunities offered at the Portland campus. What I enjoyed most were the friendships I made, the beautiful hiking trails around Portland, and the chance to learn at so many different clinical sites.

2) Something you miss about WWU?
I really miss spending time with my friends and the community I built in Portland. Those connections made my experience unforgettable.

3) Where are you working now, and what was your path to your current position?
I’m currently working at AdventHealth Orlando on the Medical PCU. As an international student, the process was challenging, but by God’s grace everything worked out and I was able to start on time.

4) Highlights and memorable moments in your nursing career so far:
One of the biggest highlights has been having an amazing preceptor—someone who is patient, funny, and genuinely wants to help me grow as a nurse.

5) How do you enjoy your current role, and what aspects of your work are most meaningful to you?
I really enjoy my role on the Medical PCU. What’s most meaningful to me is making sure my patients feel heard and respected, and advocating for them when they can’t advocate for themselves.

6) What advice would you share with current nursing students about being successful in nursing school and beyond?
Find balance. Nursing school is important, but so are rest, friendships, and taking care of yourself. When you balance school and life, you’ll feel whole—and you’ll be more successful.

7) As an international student, how was the process of getting your license?
The licensure process itself is the same for everyone—it’s challenging, but if you study, you’ll be fine. What’s different as an international student is finding a job that can sponsor your visa, since not every hospital offers that. It was a difficult search, but eventually I found the right hospital that could support me. If anybody has questions about that, I am more than happy to help!

Madi Glen is an alumna of the class of 2025. She is working in Randall Children Hospital in the NICU 🏥⚕️

We asked Madi:

1) What inspired you to choose Walla Walla University’s School of Nursing, or what did you enjoy most about your time here?
“Initially I thought of walla walla because of my sister who also attended! Overall, I loved the small class sizes at the nursing campus and the community :)”

2) What is something you miss about your WWU experience?
“I miss going to coffee shops with my friends for endless hours of delirious studying!”

3) Where are you working now, and what was your path to your current position?
“I am working at Randall Children Hospital in the NICU. I volunteered here and then applied and prayed … a lot!! Then I got the job!”

4) What have been some highlights or memorable moments in your nursing career so far?
“Some highlights of my career so far are all the firsts- first time teaching a dad how to change a diaper, first IV, first code, etc.”

5)How do you enjoy your current role, and what aspects of your work are most meaningful to you?
“I love my job and could not be happier with my experience so far! The attention to detail and the unique relationship of the nurse and the infants parents are my favorite parts!”

6) What advice or tips would you share with current nursing students about being successful in nursing school and beyond?
“It is all worth it!!! 🙌🏻🎉😊
Nursing school is overwhelming but also fun! People always told me “take advantage of your clinicals” but I didn’t know really what they meant. Try to think if you were the nurse how you would manage all these tasks and responsibilities. You’ve got this🫶🏻”

Did you know that November is the National Home Care and Hospice Month?
We want to honor one of our professors, Mary Cohen RN, MSN. She has worked several years in home health and hospice care.

We asked some questions to Mary to get to know what was her experience with this type of nursing care.

1) What brings you the most fulfillment in home health/Hospice Care?
“Meeting patients and families in their own environment to promote comfort & highest quality of life. Teaching them how to palliate their symptoms without needing aggressive medical interventions. Understanding and empathizing with caregivers in private homes, adult foster homes, and facilities (RCF, ALF, SNF, ICF).”

2) How would you describe the contributions of hospice/home health nurses to the broader healthcare system?
“With home health and hospice, we often reduce the costs of health care by providing that “stay at home” option. The utilization of the interdisciplinary team is the glue that allows all-encompassing care to happen at home. In-home care is often less invasive, more comfortable, and not as scary to many people that are managing chronic and terminal conditions.”

3) How does your real-world hospice and chronic care experience influence the way you teach nursing students?
“I am so used to teaching patients and families about illness management that teaching nursing students is a natural extension of this. I have encountered a wide diversity of patients, families, cultures, and lifestyles out in the community. Exposure to diversity has led me to be more accepting of students, their cultures, learning styles, etc.”

4) What do you hope students take away from your chronic care/palliative care course?
“Try not to judge people who have the task of managing a chronic condition 24/7. It’s important to have a compassionate, empathizing attitude to all. It’s important to realize that we really don’t know the true struggles of people. Visiting patients in their own home often gives you a better idea of these struggles, which may not always be evident in the hospital.”

Thank you Mary for all your hard work and service!🏠🤍🩺
