The real reason most people over 40 don't try again isn't what you think.
It's not laziness.
It's a quiet belief that their body has moved past the point of changing.
And it's wrong.

In 22 years of coaching at BCS Fitness, the same conversation has played out hundreds of times. Someone walks in for the first time and says, "I've tried before. More than once. I don't know what's going to make this time any different."

After 40, you lose up to 8% of your muscle every decade.
Read that again.

That's why getting out of a chair feels harder. Why your knees ache on the stairs. Why carrying groceries in one trip stopped being a flex and started being a goal.
It's called sarcopenia, and it accelerates after 60.

But here's the part nobody tells you:
Strength training reverses most of it.
Adults in their 40s, 50s, 60s, even 70s and 80s, can build muscle at nearly the same rate as 25-year-olds when they train properly. That's not a motivational quote. That's research.

The catch? "Train properly" means something very different at 47 than it did at 25.
Here's what actually works for adults over 40...

✅ 2 to 3 sessions per week. Not 5. Not 6.
✅ 30 to 40 minutes per session. In and out.
✅ Compound movements (squat, hinge, press, pull, carry). The patterns your body actually uses in real life.
✅ A movement screen BEFORE you load weight. Old ankle sprains and tight hips show up in how you lift, and nobody at a big-box gym is watching for that.
✅ Gradual progression. Your recovery is slower than it was at 25. Respect it.

I'm 47. I've coached adults in Bryan and College Station for over two decades, and the majority of my clients are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s. Many have been with me for 5, 7, even 10+ years.

Not because our workouts are easy. Because the format fits a real life.

If you've been telling yourself "I'll start when things slow down," I've got news. Things don't slow down. Your muscle mass does.
