❄️❄️Winter Weather Advisory ❄️❄️
Before anyone panics, there is NO need to stock up on milk, eggs and bread. There is a sizeable amount of snow forecasted from Saturday night into Sunday morning. Forecasts are ranging from 1-5” depending on location and storm movements. With this said, there is absolutely no need to panic. If you HAVE to be out in this weather, please follow the precautions below.
❄️ Snow Precautions for Being Outdoors
🧣 Dressing for the Cold (Layering)
• Wear Layers: Dress in loose, light, warm layers. Air trapped between layers acts as insulation.
• Base Layer: Moisture-wicking material (like wool or synthetics) to keep sweat away from your skin.
• Middle Layer: Insulating layer (like fleece or down) to retain body heat.
• Outer Layer: Waterproof and windproof shell to protect against the elements.
• Protect Extremities: You lose a lot of heat through your head, hands, and feet.
• Head: Wear a warm hat that covers your ears.
• Hands: Wear waterproof gloves or mittens (mittens are usually warmer).
• Feet: Wear waterproof boots with good traction and thick, warm socks.
• Cover Your Face: Use a scarf or facemask to cover your mouth and nose to warm the air you breathe.
🚶 Walking/Shoveling Safety
• Watch Your Step: Assume all wet, dark areas on sidewalks or steps are ice. Walk slowly, take short steps, and shuffle your feet to maintain balance.
• Clear the Path: Shovel snow early and often. For strenuous activity like shoveling, take frequent breaks. If you have heart issues, ask someone else to shovel.
• Mind Overexertion: Cold weather puts extra strain on the heart, especially during physical activity. Stop immediately if you feel faint, dizzy, or short of breath.
🚗 Driving Precautions
• Clear Your Vehicle: Before driving, completely clear snow and ice from all windows, mirrors, headlights, taillights, and the top of your car.
• Slow Down: Reduce your speed and increase your following distance dramatically, as stopping takes much longer on slippery roads.
• No Cruise Control: Never use cruise control on icy or snowy roads, as it can cause loss of control if you hit a slick spot.
• Keep Your Tank Full: Try to keep your gas tank close to full to prevent the fuel line from freezing.
• Be Prepared: Carry a winter emergency kit in your car (see list below).
• Inform Others: Let someone know your route and expected arrival time.
Otherwise, this is a perfect day to sit on the couch, binge some Netflix and sip copious amounts of hot cocoa. And don’t forget, we are still here if you need us, no matter the weather. Now to take a vote on what we are binging at the Station….
