5, 4, 3, 2, 1, is a great grounding exercise! Have you tried it? Bonus points if you replace sensory stimuli that aren’t your favorites with what you would prefer.

Examples: if you don’t like the things you are hearing around you, pull up some calming sounds on YouTube; if you’ve got a dry mouth, pop in a peppermint; clothes feel scratchy, put on your favorite hoodie. Feel grounded and empowered at the same time!

Many people think you have to have some sort of abnormal condition to go see a therapist. The truth is, the vast majority of people who see us are having normal but overwhelming stress responses to abnormal events in their lives.

Breathe and let that sink in.

It is NORMAL to be overwhelmed and to feel desperately in need of support in the year 2020.

This post counters one of the foundational beliefs that allows the stigma of mental illness to continue to thrive: The belief that depression, anxiety, etc, exist only abstractly in someone’s imagination.

Where did this belief originate and how has it continued to maintain so many ardent followers? We could launch into a deep discussion of the philosophy of mind to start at an answer but we don’t have time for all that. Let’s just dip our toes in for a brief moment. 😉

There has been a long philosophical war over the nature of consciousness. The physicalists have argued that everything in the “mind” perfectly maps onto physical properties. With the right technology a computer could essentially become conscious (and probably depressed as well but that’s for another discussion). In contrast, the non-reductionists argue that there is something immaterial that will never be identified as a physical property. For the non-reductionists, the mind is a more abstract space that gives rise to conscious experience.

While the physicalists may not turn out to be right ultimately, I think they are right about a lot more than the general population tends to believe. In other words, mental illnesses have physical properties that the right technology can observe. A lot of people continue to ignore this science and assume instead that mental illness is an abstract experience that is basically imaginary. This is at least one reason that the stigma of mental illness continues to thrive.

That may have been a bit more than just a toe that we dipped into philosophy. 😅

Respect and admiration to Dak Prescott for having the courage to talk openly about his struggles. Everyone needs support at some point, even the strong ones.
Dak, thank you for leading by example. You are much more than just a football player.

In the aftermath of his brother's su***de and his mother's battle with cancer, star quarterback Dak Prescott was candid about his own bout with anxiety and depression, while urging others to talk openly about an often difficult topic.

This is a powerful idea first introduced by the philosopher Nietzsche then discussed at length by the psychiatrist Victor Frankl in his monumental work Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl concludes that having a “why” for living gave him hope and helped him survive the concentration camps during the Holocaust.

The resolve to work toward mental wellness begins with a single decision. By focusing on our reason for wanting to be resilient we can develop the motivation to take the next step.
