Feeling stuck in helping your anxious child? You’re not alone! It’s okay to seek guidance when things feel overwhelming.

Play therapy can be a powerful tool that can help kids manage and cope with anxious thoughts, in a way that feels fun and natural!

In play therapy, toy's are the child's words and play is their language!

Play is a developmentally appropriate way for children to explore and process through their worries, increase their resiliency, and develop problem solving skills for better coping. In fact, play therapy sets a lifelong framework for healthy coping!

For more information on how play therapy might help your child's specific needs, contact us at FamilyConnectionsCounseling.com to schedule a phone consultation or learn more about our services.

Anxious kids often have specific triggers that make their anxiety feel overwhelming (like new environments, separation, meeting new people, or big transitions). Identifying your child's triggers can help you both prepare and prevent escalations.

Try it at home:

Build a 'calm kit' that your child can use when facing situations that may trigger anxiety. The kit can include a variety of tools to help ground your child and provide comfort when they’re feeling anxious.

Calm Kit Example Items:
-Fidget toys (e.g., spinners, cubes, stretchy bands)
-Favorite stuffed animal or blanket
-Calming scents (e.g., lavender oil, scented playdough)
-Noise-cancelling headphones (for noisy environments)
-A stress ball or squishy toy
-Coloring sheets and crayons
-Affirmations
-Mini flashlight (for comfort during transitions or nighttime)
-A picture of family or a safe place (to remind them of a calming environment)
-Deep breathing cards or instructions

Tip: Model using these tools for your child. When your child sees how these tools help you, they are more likely to try using them themselves.

Practicing mindfulness doesn’t have to be hard! In fact, quick mindfulness techniques can be a powerful way to ease anxious thoughts—without taking a lot of time or effort.

Try these easy exercises to help bring your child’s focus to the present moment, engage their "Calm Brain", and help them relax when experiencing anxious thoughts.

Remember: It’s not about fixing, solving, or getting rid of worry—it’s about giving kids the tools to face worry with confidence.

Have you practiced mindfulness with your child? Let us know how it’s worked for you!

Anxiety can be sneaky - it's not always easy to recognize! Teach your child to notice their body’s signals and practice calming strategies together.

Help your child notice how their body feels when "Worry Brain" is in control. Tight muscles, fast heartbeats, or sweaty palms are sometimes signals that big feelings are building.

Try it at home: Practice a 'Body Check-In.' Try having your child draw a body outline. Then, have them name their current feeling. One they have identified a feeling, have them draw symbols or color in the body outline to represent the feelings in their body. For example, if your child is feeling nervous, they might feel tightness in their chest, a rapid heartbeat, racing thoughts, or energy in their legs. Once your child has noticed the feeling and where it lives in their body, try playful stretches, wiggling it out, or practicing slow breathing to help release tension and regulate their nervous system.

Doing this exercise helps kids to recognize what their emotions feel like and how they show up physically. Noticing our feelings and how they impact us is KEY to increasing our ability to emotionally regulate.
