👂🏼What is an ear infection?!
•
•
‼️Why kids get them so often
• Shorter, more horizontal Eustachian tubes (don’t drain well)
• Immature immune systems
• Congestion from colds, allergies, or sinus issues
• Exposure to secondhand smoke or frequent illness in group settings
🌡️Common symptoms
• Ear pain or tugging at ears
• Fever
• Fussiness or trouble sleeping
• Trouble hearing or muffled sounds
• Fluid draining from the ear (less common)
• In babies: poor feeding or increased crying when lying down
•
➡️Viral vs bacterial
• Many ear infections are viral and will resolve on their own
• Bacterial infections may need antibiotics, especially if symptoms are severe or persistent
•
•
❕💊Why antibiotics aren’t always needed
• Many ear infections are caused by viruses(up to 70-80 percent), not bacteria
• Even bacterial middle ear infections often clear on their own
• Overuse of antibiotics can cause side effects (diarrhea, rash) and antibiotic resistance. They can also alter the gut microbiome.

⏰ When “watchful waiting” is used
Practitioners may delay antibiotics for 48–72 hours if:
• Child is over 6 months
• Symptoms are mild
• Infection is in one ear
• Reliable follow-up is possible
•
•
📞 When to call the pediatrician
• Severe ear pain
• Fever over 102°F
• Symptoms lasting more than 2–3 days
• Repeated ear infections
• Ear drainage
• Concerns about hearing or speech delays
