Packing a lunch can set your child up for success! ๐Ÿฅช

โœ… Gives you control over ingredients, which is great for kids with allergies or food sensitivities
โœ… Ensure balanced nutrition you know your child will enjoy
โœ… Reduce food waste with portion sizes that work for them

๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip for Parents: Even after school starts, practice lunchtime at home!. Have your child open their lunchbox, eat their food within a set time, and throw away their trash. Understanding this lunchtime routine will help them be confident and capable throughout their school years.

We wanted to share these graphics from the American Academy of Pediatrics as we enter Hand, Foot, & Mouth Disease season. ๐Ÿคš๐Ÿ‘ฃ๐Ÿ‘„

This highly contagious viral illness typically affects children under the age of 5 (although it can affect older children and adults as well) and spreads through close contact, shared surfaces, or respiratory droplets.

How to prevent it:
- Encourage frequent handwashing and disinfect shared surfaces.
- If your child is showing signs of a fever, keep them home until they are fever-free for 24 hours.
- Avoid close contact with others who are sick.
- Donโ€™t touch your face with unwashed hands.

HFMD is most contagious during the first few days of the illness, often before the rash even appears, and youโ€™ve identified it as HFMD. Letโ€™s work together to keep your little ones and their classmates healthy this school year!

If you have any questions about Hand, Foot, and Mouth or believe your child may have contracted it, please reach out to your pediatrician to discuss treatment options. Our appointment line number is (901)-757-3535.

Not sure if your child should stay home from school? ๐Ÿค’Here are a few clear signs itโ€™s best to give them a rest day:
- Fever of 100.4ยฐF or higher
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Persistent coughing
- Sore throat or swollen glands
- Rash or eye infection

If you are unsure, itโ€™s best to err on the side of caution. Keeping your child home when they are sick can help them recover more quickly and prevent their classmates from getting sick, too.

Young children get sick an average of 6-12 times each school year, and with how much sharing happens in the classroom, itโ€™s completely normal! Their immune systems are still building strength, and schools are a prime place for germs to spread.

Some of the most common childhood illnesses we see during the school year include:
- The common cold
- Strep throat
- Flu
- Stomach flu (gastroenteritis)
- Pink eye (conjunctivitis)

Keep an eye on our socials throughout the year. Weโ€™ll be sharing illness statistics and information regarding outbreaks in our area. For more information on these illnesses, please visit https://www.pedseast.com/child-illness.
