Our View

Our View To Educate, raise awareness and change the tone of conversation on topics related to disabilities I am a 40 year old African American male who has Spina Bifida.

OurView is an awareness, education, consulting company created by me, Arthur Aston. The goal of Our View is to educate and promote awareness among all people about those who live with disabilities. In addition to motivating and inspiring, more importantly, I want to change the perception and the tone of conversation regarding those who live with disabilities. Website: www.our-view.com

On Sunday, Grungo Law was proud to sponsor Our View’s annual fundraiser.

This event was especially meaningful, serving as a “passing of the baton” from the founders of Build Jake’s Place to Art Aston’s Our View organization. Art had previously served as Executive Director of Jake’s Place, making this transition a true continuation of Jim and Lynn’s mission and values.

Our View’s mission—to educate, raise awareness, and change the tone of conversation about disabilities—is built upon Jake’s Place’s legacy of creating inclusive playgrounds for people of all abilities.

The baton was also passed from the Board Members of Jake’s Place to the new Board Members of Our View. We were proud to see Grungo Law Marketing Director, Lance Wyllie, among Our View’s new board. His dedication to volunteering and helping others aligned perfectly with our firm’s core values of Community and Giving Back.

Grungo Law was excited to celebrate this milestone with Our View and remains proud to support their mission and their work with The Camden County New Jersey Miracle League.

Our mission at Our View is to change the tone of conversation about disabilty. We want to see that change happen not just in our local communities, but around the world.

I wanted to play with Our “See The World From, Our View” tagline, and have every table be named after a city around the world.

Thank you to my friend Kelly Lynch for making my vision for the seating chart come to life!!

In my speech I mentioned the following statistics:

It is estimated that 16% of the world’s population has some type of disability diagnosis.

That is 1.3 billion people around the world.

In the United States, 11% Of all adults between the ages of 18 and 64 have a disability.

In the 2022–23 school year, 7.5 million students in the United States received special education services, representing 15% of all public school students aged 3 to 21years old, who received services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

People with disabilities and their families are at a higher risk of living in poverty, experiencing social exclusion, and having a lower employment rate than people of working age who are not disabled.

There have been many conversations lately about diversity equity, and inclusion, also known as D.E.I. Are you aware that DEI also includes those of us in the disability community? Sometimes the DEI acronym adds an A on the end to include accessibility. I have lived my entire life at the intersection of being Black and disabled. Today, as a 43-year-old, I am still often overlooked in certain situations, even with a Masters Degree in psychology I was overlooked for jobs. I sometimes have to question if certain things happen to me because I am Black? Because I am disabled? Or a mixture of the two. (I will share more in the comments). As the mission of OurView states, I will always try to approach everything as an opportunity to educate.

Marissa Bode, the first wheelchair user to play Nessarose in Wicked, posted a TikTok video revealing that she’s been actively deleting comments from people joking about pushing Nessa out of her wheelchair and saying that the character “deserves” her disability.

Bode began her statement by saying that she understands why some people don’t like Nessa and clarifying that jokes about Nessarose’s personality and her fate are funny because they are based on fiction. However, Bode draws the line at jokes about her character’s disability.

Today is . Your is an incredibly important component of your overall health. Access to mental health services is a critical issue throughout the lifespan for children with Spina Bifida and their parents and other family members. Mental health is a universal human right. 1 in 5 adults in America will experience a mental illness. Half of all such start by age 14 years but most are undetected and untreated. Together we can end the stigma.

If you can, drop a word of encouragement below. Our shared journeys and words of encouragement are what make our community strong! If you're struggling with mental health issues, it's important that you speak with a healthcare professional.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, trained crisis counselors are available 24/7—whether they are considering suicide or not. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or call/text 988.
