Hi!!!!! It's Mrs. Hilary here!! Let's do it! Let's talk about those two naughty words VACCINATIONS and IMMUNIZATIONS!
Whew, now I've have gone and done it but seriously, let's dive in!
YES, just to clarify, we require routine childhood vaccines to be a patient in our office.
First question, what is the difference between vaccination and immunization? We administer a vaccine so that your body will become immunized or protected against that disease process.
I believe this journey should be kept simple and easy to understand so this is how I explain how vaccines work to our TPC families. When you get a vaccine, you are receiving a microscopic dose of that disease so that your body can recognize it as an enemy (also know as an antigen) and begin building an army to protect your body (also know as an antibody). This is how the immune system begins to build a diverse army!
So, when you walk into Walmart and with your first breath you are exposed to hundreds if not thousands of antigens (remember, these are the enemy), your body activates the antibody's (remember this is your army) and is ready to fight to keep you healthy!
Second question, can you build natural immunity? Yes, absolutely but it is very uncontrolled and at the risk of serious complications including death or permanent disability.
Third question, why do we give vaccines to babies because they just seem so little? Do you know that infants immune systems are very strong and able to adapt easily IF prepared. Which is why a microscopic dose of a disease process produces the biggest army. Our immune system gets old and stubborn with age so the exact same immunizations given to an adult would not produce the same size army thereby leaving you susceptible to the disease if exposed.
Fourth question, why do we give vaccines for diseases that aren't around anymore? Although we live in the most privileged part of the world, these diseases are still very much alive and thriving in other parts of the world. They are easily brought to America with international travel so prevalent today. This is why Measles and Whooping Cough are in our backyards now!
Fifth question, my newborn baby isn't doing drugs or having s*x so why do they get a Hepatitis B vaccine? This is a long answer but I want you to understand the science behind it. When the Hepatitis B vaccine started being given within 24 hours of delivery it was because Hepatitis B lab screening wasn't part of the routine prenatal labs. Now, Hepatitis B screening is routine so most moms are aware of their status before delivery. But in the event mom is not aware she is pregnant or in a situation where she has not had any prenatal lab screenings done, then the vaccine is given to protect the baby from getting Hepatitis B inadvertently.
BUT, lets talk about real life here for a second! Did you know that Hepatitis B lives on surfaces for up to 7 days?! Even more dangerous than HIV which only lives on surfaces for 24 hours. So you take your 15 month old baby to Walmart and put her in the shopping cart. The same shopping cart that "Hilda" was just using. "Hilda" has Hepatitis B and she didn't realize that she had a small cut on her hand and left a little bit of blood on the handle. You are shopping away and your baby is working on teeth and using the shopping cart handle as her teething toy......guess what?! YES, she was just exposed to Hepatitis B. You can't fix that! BUT, you can prevent it for sure!
Guys, I could go on for days about this! Jill and I both welcome your questions and even your fear! If we don't know the answer, we will find it! At Treasured, we are all moms and I am a Lolly! You should get a tickle yuck feeling with vaccines! It is what I call a healthy fear! I share this often and that is when my grandkids were getting their vaccines, I had that tickle yuck feeling but in that same moment, I can't imagine one of them struggling to live because of a disease that could have been prevented!
We believe and know that routine childhood vaccines save lives! There is no if, ands or buts about it! They save lives. We love your children like our own and would NEVER offer anything that had the potential to cause harm!
Vaccines are like seatbelts! A seatbelt will not save your life if you put it on after the crash!
I will leave you with this, a challenge! I challenge you to search on social media for the value of vaccines, do they save lives or what is the good they provide. GUESS WHAT?! You know the answer!
Thank you for allowing us to partner with you and your family as you navigate these tough decisions!
