Last evening was a busy and productive one for the Town of Canton Fire & EMS.

Crews returned from operating at a large brush fire in Torrington, and as always, quickly got equipment cleaned, fueled, and back in service—ready for the next call.

Back at Station 1, it was a full house. Our cadet program was hard at work training on hydrant operations at the new station, while our EMS division utilized the training room for supraglottic airway instruction led by EMS Assistant Chief Bunnell.

We are proud to share that, with approval from UConn Medical Control (Dr. Rich Kamin), the Town of Canton Fire & EMS will soon be adding supraglottic airway (i-Gel) insertion to the list of skills our EMTs can perform. All EMTs were trained and successfully checked off on this skill last evening.

This advancement will be going into service soon, allowing us to provide an even higher level of care to our community.

Last evening, the Town of Canton Fire and EMS Cadet Program hosted a family information night for its six new fire cadets and their family members. The goal of the event was to give families a closer look at what the cadet program in the fire service is all about.

Much like sports and other extracurricular activities, the cadet program often requires parents to drop off their children without fully seeing what they experience. This event provided a valuable opportunity for families to get involved, tour the new Station One, try on firefighter bunker gear, and explore the department’s apparatus fleet.

The revitalization of the Fire and EMS Cadet Program has been a major priority for the department’s chief officers. While cadets are not directly involved in recruitment and retention efforts, they represent the future of the department and are essential to achieving our long-term goal of recruiting and retaining dedicated members.

If anyone is interested in learning more about or joining the program, you can reach out via email at membership@cantonfd.com or stop by cadet training on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM at Station One, located at 51 River Rd.

The Canton Community Health Fund continues its commitment to improving the health and safety of our community by sponsoring free Community CPR classes for Canton residents. The Town of Canton Fire & EMS Department is proud to support this effort by providing the use of our training center at Station 1.

This program gives Canton residents a great opportunity to learn lifesaving CPR skills and be prepared to help in a time of need — at no cost to participants, with all costs covered by the Canton Community Health Fund.

We’re especially proud to offer this opportunity during a special year, as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Canton Community Health Fund and the 30th anniversary of the Town of Canton Fire & EMS Department. Together, we remain committed to strengthening the health and safety of our community.

We encourage Canton residents to take advantage of this opportunity and learn how they can make a difference when it matters most.

Knox Boxes Help Protect All of Us

In emergencies, every second matters. Recently, our crews responded to several calls in commercial buildings that didn’t have a Knox Box — which can delay care and cause property damage.

A Knox Box securely holds building keys so firefighters and EMS can get inside fast, without forcing doors or breaking windows.

Why it matters for all of us:
✅ Faster access during medical or fire emergencies
✅ Less damage to homes and businesses
✅ Peace of mind for neighbors, seniors, and those living alone

If you are interested in purchasing a Knox Box, please contact the Canton Fire Marshal’s Office for more information. (860) 693-7857

Last evening, Town of Canton Fire & EMS responded to Main Street for a reported gas odor.

Upon arrival, crews detected a strong smell of gas throughout the downtown Collinsville area. A leak was located between 106–110 Main Street, where gas could be audibly heard escaping from the line.

Fire units quickly secured the area and checked surrounding buildings due to the heavy odor. Connecticut Natural Gas responded and successfully isolated the issue.
