Breastfeeding is important, but success at the expense of mom and/or dad’s health is not success.

Taking a more serious tone today as we discuss the mental health of breastfeeding parents. I know the ultimate goal is successful breastmilk and breastfeeding. But, Moms and Dads...you matter too. 🖤

We have wonderful resources for mental health support here in our area and there is no shame in reaching out to those channels when you want or need to do so.

I will assist you in reaching your breastfeeding goals while keeping your mental 🧠 health at the top of the priority list.



Calling it by it’s name, and not keeping it a secret, or something to be scared or embarrassed about, is what’s going to help more families get the necessary help which in turn will allow more people to reach their breastfeeding goals 🙌🏼

Interesting. We’ve always known that hand-on pumping yields higher quantities, but it looks like it could yield higher calorie milk as well!

At the conference I attended in Philly in March, a group of IBCLCs from Massachusetts brought their creamatocrit. This machine tests the calorie content of your milk! Normally, you would take several samples throughout the day, average, etc, etc. But those of us at the conference who are currently lactating wanted to sample our milk. I tested my first milk, my last milk, hand expressed milk, milk from my regular pump, and milk from my portable pump! 🍼

Let me tell you a little bit about the results. Breast milkshake pumped milk yielded 33.9 calories per ounce 😱 while no hands on pumping yielded 26 calories per ounce.

Just for reference, your average breastmilk is about 22 calories per ounce and formula is 20 calories per ounce. 🥛

So what does that tell us?? You gotta shake ‘em up! 💃🏾 Really, there’s no line in our breast saying, “foremilk/hindmilk,” and it’s not rocket 🚀 science. It’s as simple as breaking the fat globules off the alveoli. 👩🏼‍🔬

So before you latch baby 👶🏻 or turn on the pump, take your hands and massage the breasts, loosen up the fat, be gentle...don’t hurt yourself 🤪 and let the baby (or pump!) take care of the rest. ❤️👩🏼‍⚕️ 🔬
