What does independence mean to you?

For many older adults, it’s freedom to choose what they eat, how they spend their time, and where they call home. So, when families talk about bringing in extra support, it’s natural for them to worry they’ll lose their independence.

Here’s the truth: In-home care isn’t about taking independence away. It makes it possible.

Home is where life leaves its mark.

It’s where:
✔️ Laughter fills the rooms during get-togethers
✔️ Family traditions take root
✔️ Daily routines become comfortable habits

As we grow older, these familiar spaces become even more meaningful. It’s no surprise that most adults over 50 want to stay in their homes as long as possible as they age.

This desire, called “aging in place,” reflects more than convenience. It’s about preserving comfort, independence, dignity, and connection that only home offers.

In our latest blog, we share seven benefits of aging in place and why so many seniors prefer it.

WOW!

NBA legend Alonzo Mourning built a 37 million dollar senior living complex in Florida, called Astoria on 9th. It has 120 apartments, with one and two bedroom homes that are between 635 and 900 square feet.

Rent is only 322 dollars for those with very low income, and even the highest rent is around 1316 dollars, which is still much less than most places in Florida. To qualify, seniors must be 55 or older and have an income below certain levels, so it is made for people who really need affordable housing.

The community is not just about cheap rent. It has a cyber café with internet and a kitchen, a gym for exercise, a clubhouse where people can gather, and even a dog park for pets. Everything was designed to look modern and welcoming, just like expensive apartments, so that seniors feel proud of where they live.

This project gives seniors a safe and beautiful home at a price they can afford. Alonzo Mourning showed all rich people what giving back really looks like, building something that changes lives in a real and lasting way.

🧠 Scientists uncover the brain’s natural defense against Alzheimer’s!
A groundbreaking study from UC San Francisco has identified a brain receptor, ADGRG1, that acts as a critical switch for protecting the brain against Alzheimer’s disease.

This receptor empowers immune cells known as microglia to become high-efficiency “cleanup crews,” clearing away toxic amyloid beta plaques—the sticky buildup that kills neurons and drives Alzheimer’s progression.

In both mice and human brain samples, higher ADGRG1 levels were linked to better plaque removal, stronger memory, and slower brain degeneration. Conversely, low levels correlated with accelerated cognitive decline.

What makes this discovery especially exciting is that ADGRG1 belongs to a protein family already targeted by existing drugs. This means new Alzheimer’s therapies might not take decades to develop—they could be fast-tracked by repurposing or modifying current treatments. By boosting ADGRG1 activity, researchers believe we could “supercharge” the brain’s defenses, potentially delaying or even preventing Alzheimer’s for millions worldwide.

Researchers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the University of São Paulo discovered that a brain protein called hevin, secreted by support cells known as astrocytes, can reverse memory decline in mice without removing the hallmark beta-amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s.

Hevin plays a key role in synaptic plasticity, helping neurons form and maintain strong connections. When scientists boosted hevin production in the hippocampus, the brain’s memory center, aged mice and Alzheimer’s-model mice showed significant improvements in learning and recall, even though the plaques remained unchanged. This suggests that cognitive decline may stem more from synaptic dysfunction than plaque buildup alone.

The study also found that hevin influenced dozens of proteins involved in neural communication, and confocal imaging confirmed stronger, more mature synapses in treated mice. While this research is still in early stages and limited to animal models, it opens the door to astrocyte-targeted therapies that could restore memory without needing to clear plaques.

Alzheimer’s may actually be caused by a misfiring immune system — not toxic brain plaques.

This discovery marks a major shift in understanding the disease.

A new theory is reshaping our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, long thought to be caused by the buildup of toxic beta-amyloid plaques in the brain.

Researchers now propose that Alzheimer’s may actually be an autoimmune disease—an immune system malfunction where the body mistakenly attacks itself. According to this model, beta-amyloid isn’t a harmful anomaly but a natural part of the brain’s defense system. It’s designed to protect against threats like infection. However, due to its inability to distinguish between microbial invaders and the brain’s own cells, it may accidentally launch attacks that lead to chronic brain damage and dementia.

This autoimmune theory, backed by three decades of research, could dramatically shift the focus of Alzheimer’s treatment. Instead of aiming solely to remove beta-amyloid, future therapies might target the immune system’s regulation within the brain. This opens the door to innovative treatment strategies and renewed hope for patients and caregivers alike. As autoimmune diseases like lupus and multiple sclerosis have shown, managing immune responses can change lives—suggesting that a similar approach for Alzheimer’s could lead to more effective and lasting results.

Sandy Wolfe, the 2022-2025 Alpha Delta Kappa Foundation Chairman, recently organized a heartwarming fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Association. Sandy's friend made a beautiful lap quilt🧵 and tote bag called "Always in My Heart" to honor those who passed away from Alzheimer's. Sandy sold raffle tickets for the quilt and tote at a recent Alpha Delta Kappa convention. Out of 150 available raffle tickets available, Sandy sold an incredible 146 tickets, raising $1300 (and counting) for the Alzheimer's Association! 💜 She will continue to sell additional raffle tickets until the drawing on The Longest Day, June 20th.

Sandy shared, "I was just stunned at the response." It's through creative fundraisers like this that Alpha Delta Kappa, a The Longest Day Gold National Team, will reach their $250K goal for 2025.

Sandy's friend was thrilled to hear about the excitement her quilt generated, saying it was the most any of her quilts had ever raised!

Thank you to our National Teams, like Alpha Delta Kappa International, who generously give their time, talents and financial resources to help !
