Michael Polo, OD was announced as the VOA’s 2021 Vanguard of the Year (Young OD of the Year) during the VOA Annual Conference in White Sulfur Springs, WV, on Monday, May 24, 2021.

Dr. Polo is a 2016 graduate of Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN, and completed his training at Virginia Eye Consultants in Norfolk, VA.

Dr. Polo has taken on many leadership positions in his short time since graduating from optometry school. He is president of the Richmond Optometric Society (ROS), serves on the VOA Board of Trustees, and is a member of the American Optometric Association.

Dr. Polo is passionate about serving his community by volunteering with Visionwalk in Memphis, TN; as SCO liaison to the AOSA Sports Vision Section; as a Vision Clinic Volunteer for Remote Area Medical; and with the Massey Cancer Alliance’s “Massey on the River” fundraiser in Richmond, VA.

As an undergraduate, Dr. Polo competed in NCAA Division 1 Men’s Varsity Swim and Dive Program at the College of William and Mary, where he competed in 12 meets throughout the season and participated in team volunteer work with Williamsburg Kiwanis Club, American Cancer Society, and Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department.
