5 Things To Do When You Break Down on the Side of the Road

Breakdowns can happen to anyone — knowing what to do can help keep you safer while you wait for help.

1️⃣ Move to a safe location – Pull over as far off the roadway as possible.
2️⃣ Turn on your hazard lights – Let other drivers know your vehicle is disabled.
3️⃣ Make yourself visible – Use safety gear, lights, or warning devices if it’s safe to do so.
4️⃣ Call for assistance – Contact roadside assistance, towing, or 911 if needed.
5️⃣ Stay alert and aware – Watch traffic and remain in the safest position possible.

The side of the road can be a dangerous place because traffic continues moving at high speeds while your vehicle is stopped.

Stay visible. Communicate clearly.

10 Essential Things To Do When Your Car Breaks Down:

Breakdowns can happen to anyone. Knowing what to do can help keep you safer while waiting for help.

1️⃣ Stay calm and assess the situation.
2️⃣ Move your vehicle safely to the shoulder or a safe location.
3️⃣ Turn on your hazard lights immediately.
4️⃣ Set your parking brake once you stop.
5️⃣ Make yourself visible with lights, reflective gear, or a safety vest.
6️⃣ Place warning devices or Emergency Road Signs about 50–100 feet behind your vehicle if it is safe to do so.
7️⃣ If you’re on a busy highway, it may be safest to stay inside your vehicle with your seatbelt on.
8️⃣ Call roadside assistance, a tow service, or a trusted contact.
9️⃣ Communicate your situation clearly (Flat Tire, Out of Gas, Dead Battery, Need Help).
🔟 Stay alert and watch for approaching traffic while waiting for help.

The side of the road can be a dangerous place because traffic continues moving at high speeds while your vehicle is stopped.

Stay visible. Communicate clearly.

🚗 Spring Break is right around the corner… have “THE TALK.”

Not the one you’re thinking about — the one about what to do if their car breaks down on the side of the road.

From flat tires to running out of gas to what to do after an accident, make sure your teen or college driver knows the steps to stay safe and has the right equipment in their vehicle.

We’ll also be sharing roadside safety videos soon on Emergency Road Signs™ to help drivers stay prepared.

Meet Wags, the official mascot of Emergency Road Signs.

Wags is here to remind drivers everywhere that when your car breaks down, safety comes first. The side of the road can be dangerous, and no driver should ever feel like a sitting duck waiting for help.

Our mission is simple: help drivers stay visible, communicate clearly, and get back on the road safely.
